Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Komoczi.
Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up with a single teen mother has always meant finances were tight, and in order to get the clothes I needed for both sports and school, I began thrifting at an early age. Around the same time, my grandmother introduced me to sewing, where I could tailor the clothes I got, and also make outfits for my dolls from the scraps. Both of these factors played large roles in my entertainment and how I dressed, and at the age of 18 I began to take sewing a bit more seriously as I made clothing for myself. I loved being able to create something that fit me and my aesthetic perfectly. Flash forward to last year when I found myself suck in a desk job that I hated… and it hit me! I would start my own business and become my own employer. Reaching into my tool bag I transformed my love of sewing and thrifting into a small business called Privy Thrift. This business has allowed me to use my creative gifts and a strong work ethic to produce funky, one-of-a-kind streetwear. I focus now on both 100% from scratch projects, as well as upcycling popular brands like Nike, Harley Davidson, and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although I wish I could say my path has been linear, it has in fact not been. The start of business is never easy, and the normal obstacles of starting a new business as well as personal crises has definitely made me question if I was cut out to run a small business. at times. From being overwhelmed with work, school, and MMA training to trying to start to recover from an eating disorder, my first year was filled with many bumps and bruises. However, I never threw in the towel and showed up for myself and business each day in the best way that I could, and pushed on to have a successful first year. I am grateful for the struggles of this year because I now know that I can handle whatever is thrown at me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in custom clothing that fits a variety of bodies and aesthetics! My personal style is a mixture of streetwear and eclectic prints, as well as unique silhouettes. I aim to combine creativity with practicality so people wardrobes can express their personality, without sacrificing function.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned that if you jump, the net will appear. I was extremely hesitant to pursue this craft because of its competitive market, but I took a leap, believed in myself, and never gave up.
