Check Out Amy Brown’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Brown

Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Wichita, KS, where a high school graphic design class sparked my passion for creativity. That initial fascination led me to pursue a BFA in Visual Communications (with a minor in Art History) at the University of Kansas.

My first graphic design job in 2017 was enjoyable, yet I craved a creative outlet that was entirely my own. To satisfy this urge, I started a sketchbook practice, painting patterns daily for 100 days—a habit that quickly stuck. I eventually launched a print-on-demand shop featuring my designs and was thrilled to see that people actually purchased my work!

Curious about turning my passion into a full-time career, I immersed myself in the surface pattern design industry. I began pitching my designs and successfully licensed my work with several partners.

While I continue to work in graphic design, my surface pattern business is steadily growing, and I hope to transition to it full time someday.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been struggles. I went on a hiatus from my surface design business for a couple years. I faced a lot of imposter syndrome and thought I wasn’t good enough to continue on. I remember pitching myself to several companies and faced a lot of rejections throughout that process. I eventually decided to come back and do it more intentionally. I learned how to pitch better and was more strategic about who I reached out to. Turns out it wasn’t because I wasn’t good enough, it’s because I wasn’t reaching out to the right people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a surface designer, illustrator, and artist specializing in bold, hand-painted patterns. My work is vibrant, colorful, and filled with elements like flowers, fruits, vegetables, and trendy motifs. What sets me apart is that I hand-paint all of my designs using gouache before digitizing them—this approach gives my work a unique, organic quality that stands out in a world dominated by digital design.

I’m most proud of the way my art has evolved into a business. What started as a personal creative outlet—painting patterns in my sketchbook—has grown into a career where I license my designs and collaborate with brands. One of my proudest moments was seeing my work featured with Muse Wall Studio and knowing that my art was out in the world, making spaces more joyful and expressive.

Ultimately, my goal is to bring joy and beauty into everyday life through pattern and illustration. Whether it’s wallpaper, fabric, or home decor, I love the idea of my work adding a playful, artful touch to people’s spaces.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was a little girl with a big imagination. I loved to dress up and play pretend. As I got older, I was always involved with the arts in some sort of way. I started dancing at age 5, played piano, and loved all my art classes in school.

I’ve always been an outgoing, bold person. I think my art style reflects that. Bold colors, playful motifs, and hand-painted textures bring an energy that feels me: vibrant, expressive, and unafraid to stand out.
