Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Carlson.
Hi Anne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey into real estate was somewhat unconventional. I started my career as the President of a national cancer non-profit organization based in Minneapolis. This role honed my leadership, negotiation, and networking skills which, I later realized, are all critical skills in the real estate industry. After over 15 years in the non-profit sector, I relocated to Colorado and decided to pivot my career toward real estate.
I took the necessary real estate courses and obtained my license in Colorado. Initially, I worked for a well-established real estate agency where I gained a lot of valuable experience and developed a keen understanding of the market. Over time, I built a strong network and improved my negotiation skills which ultimately led me to luxury real estate.
Today, I am grateful to have a thriving career in real estate and am continually learning and growing in this field.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is rarely smooth, and my journey has been no exception. One of the major challenges I faced was adapting to the Colorado real estate market after moving from Minneapolis. It took me some time to understand the nuances of the local market, establish a network, and build a reputation. Additionally, transitioning from a non-profit background to a highly competitive real estate environment was a significant change that required me to develop new skills and adapt my approach.
Another struggle was the economic fluctuations and market uncertainties which are part and parcel of the real estate industry. There were times when the market was slow, and it was challenging to close deals or find suitable properties for my clients. However, I remained resilient and used those periods as an opportunity to improve my knowledge, refine my strategies, and strengthen my relationships with clients.
Despite these challenges, I have found the journey incredibly rewarding. I have learned a lot, not only about real estate but also about myself, my strengths, and areas where I can improve. Each struggle has been a stepping stone towards becoming the best version of myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
For those just starting in real estate, my advice would be:
Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about the real estate market, laws, and trends. Get to know the local market, as it can vary significantly from one area to another.
Build a Strong Network: Networking is crucial in real estate. Attend industry events, join real estate associations, and connect with other professionals on social media. Building strong relationships with other real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and other industry professionals can lead to referrals and help you grow your business.
Be Patient: Success in real estate doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time to build a reputation, develop a client base, and start closing deals regularly. Stay patient and stay positive, even when things get tough.
Invest in Marketing: Marketing is key to building your brand and attracting clients. Invest in a professional website, business cards, and social media marketing. Consider using a customer relationship management (CRM) system to keep track of your contacts and follow up with potential clients.
Hone Your Negotiation Skills: Negotiation is a key part of real estate, and being a strong negotiator can make a big difference in your success.
Be Organized: There are many moving parts in a real estate transaction, and being organized will help you stay on top of everything and ensure a smooth process for your clients.
One thing I wish I had known when I was starting is the importance of setting goals and having a business plan. When I first started, I was so focused on the day-to-day tasks that I didn’t take the time to set long-term goals and develop a plan to achieve them. Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve and a plan to get there will keep you motivated and focused.
