Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariana Barnstable.
Hi Ariana , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been working on my current lazy cowgirl series for the past six years. I began these paintings up in Steamboat Springs while I was working with a costume designer and became obsessed with painting, western fashion, specifically cowgirl boots. Traveling is a huge part of my life and I create a Lazy Cowgirl series everywhere I go from Rome cowgirls on vespas to coastal cowgirls in Tulum and Aprés cowgirls Aspen. I love the ways in which my artwork evolves, and I continue to find ways to capture inspiring cities through my cowgirl motifs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
as an artist, creating a brand and finding your personal style can take time and lots of patience my advice would be to create endlessly, try new mediums, paint in different places, until you can really create a cohesive series that feels unique to you and becomes almost a second language as your expression
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a western contemporary artist based in Denver, Colorado. I have a lazy cowgirl series that is minimal, color driven and inspired by landscapes out west. I work with several mediums, including smaller watercolor pieces, large scale pieces on raw linen, and I’m currently working on a black-and-white series with watercolors on satin material in which I have the figurative line work of the cowgirl combined with my original text. I also love collaborating and have created large scale art installations, like my lazy cowgirl, saloon and even 13 foot velvet installations combining my art from my travels abroad. I think what sets me apart is my style I’ve been working on the series for the past six years and I love when people come up to me at shows saying they recognize my work and connect with both the text and the simplicity of my art. I also love curating spaces and I think that’s very unique as an artist I love creating art shows, including other artists with my work and collaborating with other creatives like musicians and chefs to host, immersive art dinner parties, and live painting and live music events I want people to be able to experience, art and unique and immersive ways that are both unforgettable and ephemeral.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I don’t know about the industry, but personally I see myself collaborating on a larger scale and creating big projects with venues. I would love to create large scale, immersive, and sculptural pieces, Art shows in beautiful places, and I see my work traveling beyond Colorado.
