Check Out Ariana Hoch’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariana Hoch.

Hi Ariana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an abstract painter and creating art has always been intrinsic to my lifestyle. After graduating from college in Portland, OR I began traveling throughout Central America and the Mediterranean. I documented my travels through watercolor paintings capturing the differing cultures through vibrant color palettes in my sketchbook. Afterward, I moved to New Orleans with my now fiancé. There we worked in the film industry and I began painting my Bird of Paradise series as I was extremely inspired by the tropical foliage of the garden districts in New Orleans. We found our way to Boulder where I became a full-time abstract artist. During the quarantine, I transformed our apartment into a studio space and created a large-scale landscape series revisiting the adventures of my past travels and exploring feelings of isolation. I am currently working on a new abstract series titled “Orange is My Favorite Color.” This series is very expressive and joyful with warm color palettes on 6x9ft linen canvases.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I believe our paths lead us to where we need to be, there are no shortcuts only lessons. There have been many lessons along the way and with that much growth! Struggles can be very humbling and eye-opening to what brings us joy in this life and what we need to pursue.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an abstract artist. I am constantly inspired by nature and my surroundings and find the easiest way to translate that joy through painting. My artwork is colorful and expressive and I enjoy painting outdoors in nature in temporary studios. Traveling has been incredibly important to my inspiration. I created a watercolor series while in Israel centered around abundance, focusing on the fruits of the marketplaces and the outdoor patios in Jaffa. While in Nicaragua I painted the shoreline on a daily basis and a series of portraits of the local cows that I would sit with on my way to the beach. Here in Colorado, I have been focusing on large-scale abstracts and recreating the landscapes of out west. I had a solo show in 2021 entitled “Sun-Soaked Horizons” which showcased my landscape series. It was a fabulous Art & Eat event catered by a local chef with over 100 guests. The dinner was paired among my artwork in a beautifully converted barn outside Boulder. I love curating experiences with my artwork and collaborating with other creatives. It is something I am looking forward to throughout my career.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Inspiration. I thrive when I am surrounded by people, places, colors, and smells that inspire me. Some of my favorite pieces are because of where they were created over what they were created with. My travels inspire my work and vice versa. The more I grow as an artist the more of the world I want to explore.
