Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Young
Hi Becky, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My barbering story is deeply personal. As someone with curly hair, I’ve faced the same challenges that many others with curls experience—finding stylists who truly understand the struggle and know how to bring out the best in textured hair. Growing up in a salon, with my mom as a hairdresser, I witnessed how much a great stylist could transform someone’s confidence, and I knew I wanted to do the same.
My own hair journey inspired me to specialize in curly hair from the very beginning. There’s such a huge need for stylists who not only know the frustrations of living with curls but also understand how to enhance them properly. My goal has always been to empower my clients to embrace their natural texture and walk out feeling confident and cared for.
Through my work, I focus on creating a personalized, welcoming experience for every client. Whether it’s adjusting my pricing to value loyal clients or ensuring every curly-haired client feels understood, I’m passionate about building trust and delivering results. It’s more than just haircuts—it’s about making people feel great in their own skin.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building my barber business, especially as a curly hair specialist, hasn’t been without its challenges. First, curly hair itself is complex—it’s not a one-size-fits-all texture. Every client has unique needs, and it takes time, education, and constant practice to become truly skilled at working with all curl patterns.
Another challenge has been addressing the lack of awareness many people have about how to care for their curls. I’ve had to act as both a stylist and an educator, helping clients unlearn years of misinformation about their hair. It’s incredibly rewarding but requires patience and communication to build that trust.
From a business perspective, navigating pricing adjustments and ensuring my services remain accessible has also been tricky. I want to grow and reflect the value I provide, but at the same time, I’m deeply committed to maintaining relationships with my loyal clients. Finding that balance has taken careful thought and planning.
Through all of this, I’ve learned that challenges often lead to growth. These experiences have made me more empathetic, better at my craft, and more determined to help others embrace their curls with confidence.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Specializing in curly hair sets me apart because it’s not just a skill—it’s a deep understanding of a hair type that is often overlooked or misunderstood in the industry. Many stylists aren’t trained in the unique techniques required for curly and textured hair, which leads to frustration for clients when their hair isn’t cut, styled, or cared for properly.
As someone with curly hair myself, I know the struggles firsthand—uneven cuts, improper product recommendations, and even a lack of understanding about how to work with curls’ natural patterns. My personal experience drives my passion to fill that gap. I take the time to educate my clients on how to embrace their curls, offering guidance on care routines, products, and styling tips that suit their specific curl type.
What truly sets me apart is that I create a space where clients with curls feel seen, heard, and confident in the results. Every curl is unique, and my goal is always to enhance its natural beauty rather than trying to fit it into a mold. By specializing in curly hair, I’m able to offer expertise and a level of care that many clients haven’t experienced before, which keeps them coming back and builds lasting trust.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, I consider myself a risk-taker, but I’m a very calculated one. I believe in taking risks that are well thought out and have a clear purpose behind them. For example, when I decided to specialize in curly hair, it was a niche that not every stylist focuses on. While it was a risk to narrow my market, I knew there was a significant need for it and that my own experience with curly hair gave me an edge.
Before taking any leap, I always weigh the potential challenges and benefits, make a plan, and ensure I’m prepared for different outcomes. I’m not afraid of taking risks, but I approach them strategically so I can turn them into opportunities for growth and success. For me, calculated risks are what drive progress.
