Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Malin.
Hi Brad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a serial entrepreneur since a kid. I started a car detailing business when I was 13 and learned from my Dad, who was an entrepreneur, ” being your boss is the best way to live.” So, I learned early on, that the entrepreneurial onset was in my blood and what I would do. Being an entrepreneur is the most rewarding yet frustrating, most difficult thing I have ever done. I love the challenge of creating something new and the value I can bring to the world.
Learning from failure is what it is all about and if you have the grit and work ethic, you can be an entrepreneur. That is me. I have been in medical device distribution for 25 years. I have also consulted in real estate, biotech, entertainment, distribution, and private equity. I created CompanionCBD in October 2018. A colleague of mine contacts me about a CBD company looking for direction to get their business off the ground. I consulted with that company for a year and decided to resign and create CompanionCBD.
I partnered with Dr. Josh Sosnow, DVM. We are a veterinarian-owned CBD manufacturer and education company excessively for pets. We pioneered continuing education in veterinary medicine. We have trained more than 30,000 veterinary professionals globally about the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of CBD in clinical practice. Our tagline is an educated consumer is our best customer.” We sell/distribute our CBD products to veterinary hospitals globally, retail, pet stores, and boutiques, and we have an e-commerce platform at CompanionCBD.com.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road… CBD is not currently regulated, which has been a challenge from day one. When we created CompanionCBD, most people didn’t have a clue what it was. It was being touted as a “cure-all,” which it is not, but clinically, it is very effective in different conditions.
This is why we created our business model by leading with education first, by educating veterinary professionals and pet parents alike, with the real evidence-based science of cannabinoid medicine. This is what gave us our name-brand name recognition in veterinary medicine. As previously mentioned, CBD is currently unregulated, there is a significant amount of misinformation and adulterated products in this space.
Again, we have set the standard by educating the veterinary community all about CBD, including what to look for in safe, effective CBD products. It’s all about giving people peace of mind, as a veterinarian-owned company. We know best about pets and CBD. Scaling any business can be very challenging. To effectively do so, the necessary capital is paramount to make it all happen. This has been the most difficult part of our business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In 2018, CompanionCBD set out to create a new paradigm for Cannabinoid science for veterinary medicine, not only for veterinarians but also for all pet parents. Our award-winning products are designed using an evidence-based approach, incorporating the latest scientific evidence and clinician experience.
CompanionCBD was founded with a simple idea in mind: CBD (cannabidiol) can be a valuable tool in the management of a wide range of diseases in pets, but only if it can be made available in a safe, palatable, easy-to-administer form, and dosed effectively. We have done just that.
CompanionCBD is the leading producer of CBD-based products for the veterinary market. We pioneered continuing education for veterinary medicine on a global platform. We have trained 30,000+ veterinary professionals on the clinical applications, pharmacogenetics, and dynamics of CBD.
Our CBD products were created to improve the veterinarian’s ability to manage many difficult, chronic conditions with or without the use of pharmaceutical agents. Our comprehensive approach to these formulations is unique, integrating additional supplements that have clearly been shown to have a positive impact on the management of many chronic conditions.
From osteoarthritis to anxiety, to the management of cancer side effects, our products enhance a patient’s quality of life while minimizing the potential for side effects commonly associated with more traditional therapies. Our products are proudly produced from 100% USA-grown Hemp and are THC-free, made here in the USA. We sell directly to Vet Hospitals globally, retail, and online. We use third-party independent labs for testing, to ensure our products are free of any heavy metals, pesticides, and THC.
Being that CBD is not currently regulated, we have set the standard by providing evidence-based CBD products and education for vet medicine. We also educate pet parents via our veterinary concierge service that we offer on our website, CompanionCBD.com. Anyone can use our “Ask-A-Vet” feature, to be connected to a veterinarian on staff, to discuss their pet’s issues and how we can help manage that particular condition(s). This service is FREE at CompanionCBD.com, click on “Ask-a-Vet.”
As a veterinarian-owned CBD manufacturer, this sets us apart from all the others, as most are re-sellers and do not manufacture their products, and are not doctors of veterinary medicine. We have won five product innovation awards since our inception. We also lecture at local, state, national, and international veterinary medical conferences and associations.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was raised by two parents and have two brothers. I was a well-rounded kid. Sports was my passion, but I also played the piano, and saxophone, and sang in the choir and a cappella group in high school. Sports came easy to me. My goal was to be a professional athlete. Soccer was my main sport and true passion. I played soccer for many years and had the opportunity to play all over including internationally. I gave up soccer to kick a football in college, but after too many injuries, my career was cut short.
My father was an entrepreneur, so I was exposed to that environment as a child. I knew I wanted to also be an entrepreneur. To have the freedom to do what I want, when I want, I thought was priceless. However, it’s not for everyone and takes dedication, commitment, grit, sacrifice, and much more. I am very grateful to have been an entrepreneur for 25 years. I always loved animals. We always had dogs growing up, mostly German Shepards. So, animals were always part of the family and still are to this day.
