Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Fashaw.
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Like many people today, I’ve always dreamed of owning my own business and working for myself, but I had no idea what I could do to make that dream a reality. I truly never expected to take the form of ice cream, but in retrospect, ice cream made perfect sense.
I grew up in South Dakota in a family of eight children, who were being raised by a single mother. Our mom supported us kids on her meager teacher’s salary, and she being a farmer’s daughter, rarely bought processed foods. She believed that processed foods had little to no nutritional value, therefore they were a waste of her hard-earned money.
My mother was the eldest of nine girls and was responsible for helping take care of her younger sisters. By the time she had her own family, she was quite an accomplished home pastry chef, and expert at concocting her homemade ice cream recipes Fortunately for us kids, we grew up in a house that always smelled of baked bread. For all of our birthdays, we would make homemade hand-churned ice cream.
In July of 2014, my brother Mark was searching the Internet looking for business ideas when he came across some recipes for alcohol-infused ice cream. It sounded a little crazy, but we decided to try to come up with our recipes bought a little cheap ice cream maker, and put together a recipe for White Russian flavor. The next day, my brother Tony was having his annual birthday party, so I decided to take it there and see what everyone’s reaction would be. Well, they were ranting and raving about how good it was. Huge hit!
After the party, I put together more recipes and eventually got the packaging done. I would take samples to Liquor stores and present the product for tastings. After getting the first store, other ones followed. I am currently in 50+ liquor stores and a few restaurants.
I’ve recently been working with people outside of Colorado to start selling across the country. New business model…
Flavors in stores now:
Bourbon Butter Pecan
Salted Caramel
White Russian
Mint Chip
Brownie Mudslide
Cookies n Creme
Peanut butter cup
Banana cream
Amaretto Cherry toasted Almond
Raspberry Truffle
30 more flavors that I bring in and out!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I love most, is doing tasters and events, and being in touch with my customers. I love to see the look on people’s faces when they try my creations.
Second, I lose sleep when I’m coming up with a new flavor. I’ll wake up and go over the recipe a thousand times till I think I found one that works. Happy to say, that works ninety percent of the time on hitting it the first try. The other ten percent probably takes up to 4 times to get to where I want it. Also, through the years, I’ve sold ice cream to people like Rod Smith from the Broncos who is now a mentor, Steve Atwater, Nomar Garciaparra, and Mia Hamm amongst other high-profile people.
I pride myself on using nothing but the best ingredients in my ice cream. I don’t use imitation flavors or extracts. The use of real fruit such as bananas, raspberries, peaches, and pineapples makes a big difference in the flavor. Also, like most ice cream companies, they pump air into their product, I don’t. This is another reason why my ice cream is so rich and creamy.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have been using SCORE… You can go on the website and request a mentor for whatever your needs are. They provide you with retired professionals and entrepreneurs. The best part is they are free and love to help.
