Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Hutkay.
Hi Brittney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Britt’s Botanical Works started during a season of burnout, survival, and quiet rebuilding. I was navigating motherhood, mental health challenges, and the weight of trying to hold everything together when I realized how little space I was giving myself to rest. At the same time, my family and I were struggling with persistent skin issues—sensitivity, dryness, and reactions to products that were supposed to help but often made things worse. Creating our own skincare began out of necessity, with the simple goal of healing our skin using ingredients I could trust.
I started experimenting with traditional, ingredient-conscious soapmaking in my home—using clays and botanicals for natural color, tallow sourced from local producers, and thoughtfully chosen fragrance and essential oils. The process itself became both practical and healing: our skin improved, and I found the slow, intentional nature of soapmaking deeply grounding. What began as a solution for my family quickly turned into a creative outlet, then something friends and community members began asking for as well.
Today, Britt’s Botanical Works is shaped not only by my love for natural skincare but also by my background in psychology and my ongoing education in clinical mental health. I believe self-care should be accessible, honest, and rooted in real life—not perfection. Every product is created to support both skin health and emotional well-being, offering small, meaningful moments of calm in the middle of busy, often overwhelming days. The business is a reflection of my journey—proof that care, healing, and purpose can grow from necessity and transform into something meaningful for others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small businesses, Britt’s Botanical Works was built alongside real life—parenting, health challenges, financial stress, and the emotional weight that comes with starting something from the ground up. There were moments where consistency felt impossible and seasons where I questioned whether I could keep going at all.
One of the biggest challenges was learning to grow at a pace that was sustainable. I had to balance production, markets, and creative work while also protecting my mental health and family time. There was a steep learning curve with sourcing, pricing, and trusting the value of my work, especially in a market that often undervalues handmade products.
I’ve also had to navigate setbacks that come with visibility—comparison, self-doubt, and the pressure to show up even when life is heavy. What carried me through was returning to my “why”: creating gentle, effective products born out of necessity and care. Every challenge shaped how I run the business today—with more intention, boundaries, and grace for both myself and the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Britt’s Botanical Works, I create small-batch, handcrafted skincare designed to support sensitive skin and intentional self-care. I specialize in traditional cold-process soaps, tallow-based moisturizers, bath soaks, and everyday skin staples made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients. I use natural clays and botanicals for color whenever possible, avoid unnecessary fillers, and focus on formulations that are gentle, effective, and rooted in simplicity.
My work is deeply influenced by my life outside the studio. I’m a mother, a student pursuing a career in clinical mental health, and someone who has personally navigated mental health challenges while balancing family, work, and caregiving. Those lived experiences shape how I view self-care—not as a luxury, but as something practical, necessary, and deeply human. Many of my customers come to me because they or their families struggle with sensitive or reactive skin, and they’re looking for products that feel safe, grounding, and made with real intention.
What sets Britt’s Botanical Works apart is that it exists at the intersection of skincare, mental health, and everyday life. My background in psychology informs how I design products and talk about self-care. I think about routines as nervous-system support and small rituals as a way to create stability in busy, often overwhelming seasons. This isn’t about perfection or aesthetics—it’s about care that fits into real homes with real people.
What I’m most proud of is building something that grew alongside my family and my own healing. The business was born out of necessity and has evolved into a space where I can support others through both tangible products and meaningful connection. Knowing that something I create can help someone feel more comfortable in their skin—physically or emotionally—is what makes this work so fulfilling.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was deeply observant, creative, and emotionally intuitive. I was the kind of kid who noticed details—how people felt, the atmosphere in a room, the small things others might miss. I spent a lot of time in my inner world, drawn to books, art, nature, and anything that allowed me to make sense of complex emotions.
I was always curious and hands-on. I loved creating things—whether that was crafting, experimenting, or turning ideas into something tangible. At the same time, I carried a strong sense of responsibility from a young age and often felt older than my peers. I was empathetic, protective, and deeply connected to the people I loved, which shaped both my creativity and my drive to care for others.
Those early traits never really left. Today, they show up in how I approach my work, my family, and my future career in mental health. The same curiosity, sensitivity, and creativity that defined me growing up are now the foundation of how I build Britt’s Botanical Works—thoughtfully, intentionally, and with a deep respect for the emotional lives of others.
