Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Jeffcoat.
Hi Cameron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I had always been musical in nature. Even as a kid, I remember always talking about how I wanted to be a big-time artist. While that standpoint has changed quite a bit over the years, music is still my true passion, but I’m more focused on making the best music I can, rather than gaining external pleasures from it. I really started taking music seriously in middle school when I was introduced to Tyler, The Creator and Odd Future. I was mesmerized by the way they preached to kids, just like me, to follow our dreams, and I felt like I belonged somewhere in a time where I was extremely lonely and always felt like the weirdo. At that moment, everything seemed so clear. I knew what I needed to do. I decided that I was wasting my time focusing so hard on school, which I never liked in the first place, and wasting even more time trying to impress the wrong people. I started to dive deeper into my biggest influences and really try to understand and learn from them. Tyler, The Creator, XXXTentacion, Childish Gambino, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Joji, Scarlxrd, Juice WRLD, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X, and so many more artists were the reasons why I felt encouraged to show my true self to the world. I realized that I am a weirdo. I am an artsy creative type of weirdo. I am an individualistic, and ambitious weirdo. I finally realized I AM weird, and that it was my biggest strength all along. This led to me finally pursuing a route in learning music. I downloaded a very beginner DAW on my phone called FL Studio Mobile, and ever since that day I have taught myself everything I know about making music. I worked on that little phone for over a year, and then just kept moving up, acquiring more musical gear, resources, platforms, and most of all, knowledge in everything to do with music. I had gone from being that shy and scared kid with no real direction to being my true self at every turn and not holding myself back from achieving any dream I have. I built my own home studio, constantly working at my craft to be a better artist. I still have so much to learn, and I am still working hard to learn more about the nature of music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, I can’t say that I had the hardest life, but this whole music thing has definitely not been easy. I mostly dealt with mental obstacles, rather than physical obstacles. I had obstacles like family problems, trauma, and internal struggles, but I feel like most kids from my generation do. That’s one of the main reasons I make music. I want those same people, the creatives, the dreamers, the weirdos just like myself, to find comfort in knowing that there are others out there who understand them. One of my biggest obstacles throughout my earlier teenage years was feeling alone. In a world where you have all the information you could ever want at your fingertips, and talk to anyone from anywhere in the world, I feel like my generation has somehow turned out feeling the loneliest compared to any other time in history. So, I thought, “You know what, since we all feel so alone, why not find my people through the one thing that always connects others. Art.” You don’t have to have the same beliefs as someone else to appreciate their art. You don’t have to come from the same place they did, or even speak the same language to understand good art, or in my case, music. I have overcome a lot of the obstacles that I started this journey with through this passion of mine. Now my main goal with my music is to just continue becoming a better artist and spread my art to the people who are willing to listen. I believe that I can not only find my people through music but also let them find me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do a lot of different things. My main job right now is working as a barista at Starbucks, but I’m sure no one wants to hear about the regular stuff, so I’ll get into the more interesting stuff. I am also a real estate agent working as a transaction coordinator. I really enjoy good business, and learning about business, so I decided to go into that because it pays well, and it can push along my music career faster. I also invest in different things. I have my music business, on top of my real estate business. I also have another job as event staff for live music events and other events, but I just recently started that. I do quite a bit, but in all honesty, I do all of this so I can invest more into my music and one day, travel the world. The main things I am proud of, career-wise is just being on top of my situation, and not being afraid to adapt or change things to suit my future better. When it comes to music though, I am really proud of the fact that every time I release a song I feel like it was better than my last. I haven’t attracted too much attention from music, but my most streamed song “Gojo” was streamed over twenty thousand times, which I was very proud of. I think the thing that really sets me apart from others is my ability to be true to myself, and be so open to my own creativity. I always stay open-minded, learn as much as I can, try new things and experiment with music, and I am always trying to innovate the way I make music. I don’t conform to what is trending, or care if everyone likes my music or what I have to say, and I just try to make the music that I like. I just listen to my creativity, and when I feel insecure or start second-guessing myself I just remind myself that there is only one “me” and it would be a waste of time to not be myself and explore what/who that truly is.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Honestly, I don’t listen to many podcasts or apps. I do read from time to time, but I have always been more interested in creative writings and fiction. Poems and philosophy have also been a larger interest of mine throughout the years. I really enjoy reading, listening, learning and speaking about philosophy over most other writings. Other than that I would have to say that I just really enjoy the artsy and creative sources of expression.
