Check Out Cat Barthel’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Barthel.

Hi Cat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved drawing, painting, and being creative growing up, but I never thought it could be a small business for myself until the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. I remember at one point I was burnt out of watching Netflix and needed a new outlet to cure my boredom so I picked up a canvas and decided to get creative. As I was painting for the first time in years, I realized how much I loved creating and how therapeutic it could be as well. The remainder of the pandemic I pushed out more pieces I had done in a decade and now zoom a few years later to 2022; here I am still doing my thing and starting a small business I couldn’t be more excited about!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Becoming a freelance artist as a partial career has been absolutely terrifying. As much gusto and passion, I have towards my craft, self-doubt has always played a huge obstacle as far as making it a “smooth road”. It’s the scariest thing putting yourself out there,” are they going to like my art enough to buy it?” Or “this person is better at this than I am” have always crossed my mind. It’s taken a while for me to realize I still wouldn’t be truckin on if I didn’t have confidence that I’m going to succeed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My medium I love to use the most is acrylic paints. I love how quick I can be to add, takeaway and I love the vibrancy of them as well. I would say my specialty is capturing emotion through sound and color. A lot of my pieces I paint along with a certain vibe of music in mind and portray that through movement in the piece and a reflection of what colors I think it feels like. As I’ve developed my style, I’m proud that each piece I’ve created has some kind of new element that I’m working on perfecting, like realism or symmetry as current examples.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Believe it or not, just living every day has helped me immensely with how I feel with life at the moment. I used to be one to sit around and wait for things to happen, but in order for there to be change, there also needs to be the same amount of work put towards it as well. I feel like I could read or listen to whatever, but if I want things to get done and feel good about my progress, I have to be part of that.
