Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlee Massey.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a cake decorator at a local grocery store about 15 years ago – that’s when I first fell in love with expressing myself creatively with food.

This is where I learned decorating basics as well as what it’s like to work in the food industry. Through this humble beginning, I started to learn about how fun and rewarding it can be to create something unique and custom for my customer’s special occasions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some struggle I have faced along the way is the constant pivot that is a part of owning your own business.

I’ve had to strike a balance between staying true to myself and lending my talents to projects I feel passionate about and following trends.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home baker under the cottage foods act. I specialize in making custom-decorated sugar cookies and cakes for special events and holidays as well as teaching cookie decorating classes.

I am most proud of my cookie decorating classes – I feel passionate about teaching others to appreciate the art, precision, and practice it takes to make beautiful cookies at home.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Since the pandemic, I have seen a lot of new home bakers popping up doing amazing things in the cookie and cake decorating world. My advice to those just starting out would be to stay true to yourself, remain humble, be a good student of those who have gone before you, and have fun.

It’s a wild ride starting your own business and if you’re not having a little fun challenging yourself to be the best you can be, it’s time to reevaluate!
