Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsi Dieg.
Hi Chelsi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When the pandemic started, I transitioned from wedding photography to bleaching and sublimating shirts. This meant I was spending a lot of time in the sun and then standing at my heat press. In May 2021 I was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis after losing my ability to walk and control of the right side of my body, unable to even close my heat press. For my mental health, I always need a creative outlet and a good friend of mine was doing ice dyeing and told me I should give it a shot. This coming May will be a year since I first started tie-dyeing, and I could have never predicted the growth I’ve seen so quickly.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me is the realization that comparison is the thief of joy. Once I began to focus on my business and its identity, instead of other businesses, I grew exponentially. In parallel, I’ve helped bring together an amazing group of people where we all love and support each other in accomplishing our artistic and business goals. I think it’s important to realize that success isn’t a pie, there is room for us all to be successful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in ice-dyeing clothing and other fabrics. I’m known for my style in the tie-dye community, known as tall deep scrunches (TDS) which gives the “flowy”, watercolor vibes on clothing.
I’m most proud of the diversity of the application of my craft. I’ve spent countless hours (and dollars) experimenting with different fabrics and applications in the search for my brand’s identity and how it comes to life on fabric. I’ve successfully ice-dyed clothing, curtains, blankets, socks, hats.
What sets me apart is my willingness to share my methods and failures in the tie-dye community has not only helped me grow but helped the community grow.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
My favorite podcast is ‘The Last Podcast on The Left’ and ‘Morbid’ and I usually have it playing while I’m working. I also love browsing Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. I enjoying coming up with color palettes based on beautiful painting, quilts, sneakers, or even photographs. In my free time, I like mindlessly scrolling on TikTok. I also have a Facebook group that’s made up of fellow dyers.
