Today, we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Carpinello.
Hi Cheryl, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a retired high school English teacher and a retired airline employee. I’m also a Colorado native. My husband and I have 2 grown kids and 4 grandkids. We love to travel and my retirement from the airlines allows us to explore the world!
It is my years of working with students that inspired me to write. Working with so many students who didn’t like to read, I continually searched for stories to entice them into books. I found the stories around the King Arthur Legend and from the Ancient World intrigued them enough to get them to read more.
Upon retiring, I started writing Tales & Legends for Reluctant Readers using Arthurian Legend (ages 8-12) and Ancient World Tales (ages 13+). I’ve also added Grandma/Grandpa’s Tales (ages 5-7). There are ten books so far, with more on the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started writing, self-published authors were frowned upon. Opinions have made a dramatic shift since then. I consider myself an Indie Author. Control of my work rests solely with me. So does all the marketing, which requires a major amount of time.
I belong to an author consortium based in England: Silver Quill Publishing (www.silverquillpublishing.com). We number 14 authors. I’m the only US author; most are English authors.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a regular visitor to elementary schools and bring my Medieval Poetry workshops. The kids enjoy writing poems using the Medieval World as the background. The complete title of the workshops: Medieval Illuminated Poetry. These workshops focus not only on writing but on drawing and illustrating.
Meeting so many potential readers face-to-face at school craft views lets me expand my reach 10-fold! I’m thrilled when previous buyers of my books come back to tell me how much they enjoyed my stories!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share?
The COVID crisis only emphasized what I already knew: Students of all ages need to be actively & physically engaged with other students and teachers, not just through a computer, to embrace learning.
