Today we’d like to introduce you to Clinton Webb.
Hi Clinton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing freelance web and graphic design actually during the pandemic. I call my business and career a “silver lining” from that time since it allowed me to get a handle on what I wanted to do and how I wanted to brand myself. I was lucky to have the help of a few friends to get a solid foundation under me with a few projects and everything just kind of grew from there. I’ve now been in business for over two years and wouldn’t change a thing about it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always struggles when starting a new business! A lot of my struggles come from the dreaded “imposter syndrome” that comes with being creative. It’s almost a constant uphill battle to reassure myself that yes, I am good at what I do and I’m helping others. I combat this by constantly learning and growing my skills.
I thrive in an educational environment and as long as I’m making at least a 1% improvement towards a goal I’m trying to reach with my skills a day I’m happy. The other major challenge about going freelance is never knowing if you’re going to have a stable income for the month. I’ve gotten good at saving money and limiting my expenses so I can have an emergency fund.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work mostly focuses on website and brand identity design. I started building in Squarespace almost ten years ago and haven’t looked back since. I also work in the digital marketing realm doing search engine marketing and email marketing for clients. What sets me apart from most other Squarespace designers is that my sites are 100% custom and don’t use templates.
I start with a completely blank Squarespace site and design and develop based on what my clients need. I can also do a full website, branding, and SEO package for clients where I essentially take care of all of their design and website needs. Not a lot of other freelance designers can say they do that.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I think the biggest lesson I learned during the pandemic is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. It’s hard at first but it’s very important if you want to be an entrepreneur.
