Check Out David Cox’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Cox

Hi David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well I like to think my story is one of redemption. In my twenties and some thirties I had to make my way through my addiction and in return acquired nearly two decades of sobriety. That’s who I am. A grateful human. At 40 I had a daughter and found a great way to be a part of her childhood on was to turn my hobby of gemology and jewelry making into a profitable business. I then went on to be an accomplished gemstone faceter across multiple disciples.
I now get to cut amazing stones and travel the US living the absolute dream.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t view hard work as a struggle so it has been fairly smooth. The only things I found not to be the case were obtaining info and techniques. It takes time to learn your craft but I’ve slowly chipped away at pulling the veil back on practices from the previous generation who by habit want to keep industry secrets. Now many more people like myself are very open to new cutters. We know we only grow by expanding the pool of talent and awareness. It’s what we need to have our industry to succeed. I’ve faced opposition on my openness but often times it is based on fear from their own part.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in precision gem cutting. Using state of the art techniques and tools we’ve had for decades. We use techniques including fantasy cutting, concave faceting, and of course flat faceting. I had no mentor and I think people need to be assured you can learn on your own. Everything I’ve learned started from simply watching YouTube videos and observing. What truly makes me feel pride is the reaction from the public when they notice the time and effort we put into our precision cutting. We source the very best facet grade gems them cut them throughout the year. My clients are everyone. Jewelers, collectors, and anyone else in the retail and wholesale arenas.

What makes you happy?
I’m a man of many hobbies but no question being a dad is my absolute joy. We live in a rural area so we have dogs, cats, chickens….. We see life every day so it’s easy to appreciate a normal day and serenity. Obviously when I’m in my office creating I’m very happy. Being immersed in a stone creates vistas. I’ve been blessed with a great core group of people around me who I owe all the credit to for any success we may have.
