Check Out Debra Mills’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Mills

Debra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Boozee Treats was born out of fleeting thought shared with a friend. My comment of “we should make alcohol infused ice cream” we put alcohol in jello & pudding, why not ice cream! Given it covid was just kicking in, I let it ride. A year later, I presented the idea to our local small business development center. The idea sparked interest so I purchased an ice cream maker, tried a few recipes and had an ice cream tasting with Loveland Chamber and SBDC. Everyone loved what I had to offer and Boozee Treats was born.

I started out making alcohol infused ice cream for friends, family and small private gatherings. I continued to make more flavors and word got around how delicious my creations are, I decided to attempt a few alcohol infused cake, cheesecake and brownie recipes that were equally delicious. Today the possibilities are endless. I make cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes, chocolates, mousse, and more in so many flavors & sizes. There is literally something for everyone.

My motto is “If it’s a cookie, candy bar, cocktail or you can dream it, I can make it”

I absolutely love the look on customers face when they hear what I do, even more heart warming to me is the expressions on their faces when they try my treats. I truly enjoy collaborating with friends, family and customers to bring their flavor ideas to fruition.

I now attend as many public events as possible, I recently purchased a food trailer so I can be more mobile and will be working towards having my products served in local restaurants and sold in local liquor stores.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Because my products are unique and delicious things have gone pretty well. I would say the biggest struggle has been keeping myself in check through the growth period. I have so much fun baking and creating and so many ideas for new treats that I want it all, right now. Growing within my means is important to remind myself as well

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a mortgage loan officer for 26 years, I love helping first time home buyers achieve home ownership. I have always believed that if I didn’t need money to survive, I wouldn’t care if I didn’t get paid. Getting my borrowers to the closing table is my payoff, my commission is my bonus.

What sets me apart in the mortgage industry is that I fight hard for my customers. No isn’t in my vocabulary, no means what do we have to change or do different to get a yes. In regards to Boozee Treats, my treats are all small batch, made from scratch, my own recipes, I also offer alcohol free, dairy free and gluten free upon request.

That being said, I have had my Boozee Treats business for 2.5 years, in addition to being a mortgage loan officer. Therefore, I get to live my passion day & night. It is so very meaningful helping someone achieve homeownership but is also so meaningful seeing the looks on peoples faces when they try my amazing treats.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
No risk, no reward. The biggest risks I have taken are getting out in the public eye, especially at events where you may not expect a product like mine. It may be risky going to an alcohol free event with a name like Boozee Treats but the name itself sparks interest so I still have people come to me to try what I have and hear more about what I typically offer. It was also risky taking on big events such as the Loveland Habitat for Humanity’s Builders Ball. For that event I made 1250 or so small desserts, that was my largest event yet. I am a one woman entity so a little risky taking on the challenge of making enough treats, quick enough to be on time, on target and in short enough period of time that everything was fresh. I made it!!
