Today we’d like to introduce you to Dekevian Jones.
Hi Dekevian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I first was introduced to music at the age of 10. I had a crush on this girl in one of my classes and I heard she was going to be taking band as an elective, so I joined and fell in love with the clarinet. A few years down the road, I would eventually get into playing the bass clarinet on account of beginning the descent into my “alternative phase”, discovering Ozzy Ozzbourne, and learning that Zakk Wylde’s first instrument was the bass clarinet. From this point, I would enter high school and begin messing around with FL Studio, guitar, and rapping, using these outlets, I would make sense of all the bullying and confusion that came with being a young alternative black kid in the south. Along the way, I met a couple of like-minded misfits and we would attempt to make metalcore and Nintendo core bands to no avail. I will mention that we once performed ‘Welcome Home’ by ‘Coheed and Cambria’ under the name Dova Fus which is Dragon Force in a language from video game we were all so fond of at the time. Eventually, college came and it was time for my friends and I to go our separate ways in life. This tore me up and caused me to spiral into various darker elements of life. I went to school for game design, graduated by a technicality, and spent a couple of years on and off making lo-fi beats and working at Starbucks across two states. Many heartbreaks, come to Jesus moments with myself, getting stranded in the deserts of New Mexico, hallucinogens, a trip to jail that I still can’t fully remember, and ostentatious amounts of caffeine later, I ended up in Denver with a revised idea of what my goals in life are. I want to live to create and provide a deeper dive into the modern-day journey of a troubled youth working to become better than they were the day before and all the ups and downs that that narrative entails. I left out quite a bit, but those are stories for another time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road at all, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Between discovering my own sound, falling in and out of love, adopting terrible coping mechanisms, enemies becoming friends then back to enemies, friends dying, being stabbed as I woke up one time to my girlfriend cheating on me in the same bed, being drugged and waking up in jail, and learning what true self-care and self-love is, I’d have to say that this road has been a little rocky. This rockiness is part of what makes this journey worth living for!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, my day job is a pawnbroker and jewelry designer, but on my days off, I freelance as an audio engineer. When I have time to myself, I enjoy designing clothes, jewelry, 3D modeling, drawing, reading. Back in Texas a few years ago, I started a clothing brand and dubbed it ‘Cancel Everything Clothing Co’. Everyone in my hometown loved the designs online, but it took me driving to the big city and standing on the corners of Deep Ellum to get them sold. I appreciate everyone that has ever bought one of these pieces from me and have something in store for those of you that are now interested.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I wouldn’t be where I am today creatively if it wasn’t for my father, brothers, Chris Smith, and the entire Oliver clan. I hold you all to my heart dearly.
