Today we’d like to introduce you to Deris Tillis
Hi Deris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out with my first microphone at 16. As my skills grew, so did my passion for the music. I used to go on rap genius and study all my favorite artists to the point where I understood all of their lyrics. I continued to get better until I got to the point where I built a solid fanbase and took a different approach to the game than the popular route. I feel I get better every project and truly take pride in my art form. With my new release, I feel I have hit an even deeper level of venting and artistry and I hope to continue to be able to do so until I get signed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The simple fact is that anyone who starts off in anything, sucks at it. I was good at writing lyrics but terrible at everything else. It took years just to perfect my voice and cadence to the level it is now. That along with the fact that being a musician is no guarantee of success and also that lots of people do what you do, it’s hard to stand out and I can feel embarrassing to tell people at times. But, you have to look past that doubt to become great. It’s truly a journey, but I’ve always known I wanted to do this.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a very talented lyricist and rap artist who takes pride in witty punchlines and metaphors while still representing fans that have struggled but not been in the streets. I try to give a perspective of kids who grew up with different issues like mentally or emotional struggles, as well as making constant mistakes but finding confidence in oneself. I love to make music that people can listen and relate to but also music for true rap fans who love lyricism.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Continue to drop music, even if it’s bad. You can only preform up to your current abilities. Music is tricky because you can’t really train for it. You have to listen to lots of music, study lyrics of those you enjoy and try to find your own sound, which takes time. I just got good around 23 and i started at 16. It takes times but you can achieve it if it’s truly a passion for you. Write, write, write.
