Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Guerrero.
Hi Desiree, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’ve always loved drawing and painting. I have so many coworkers of mine who have sticky notes with many of my characters. They would use it to decorate their desk and they still have it. I work from home now and I have time to paint and be more creative with my work. I started sharing my paintings on Facebook and Instagram and someone approached me and asked if they could buy one of my paintings and that’s how it all started. I realized that right now people need a glittery distraction from work and everyday life. Sometimes you just need something cute or funny to look at to stimulate your brain.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since COVID it definitely has not been a smooth road. It definitely affected everyone in one way or another. My art helped me go into a different space where my creativity uplifted me and come to find out it did the same for others. If it wasn’t for my art the road would definitely be bumpier, but the more I paint and share my work it makes me feel like I can make a difference in some way. It helps me stay focused and continue to think positive.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m self-taught. I think that is what I’m most proud of. I never liked art class in school because art should be free form. I don’t think there should be a “certain way” that your own art should be done. My art focuses on glitter, cupcakes, unicorns, anything cute but at the same time connecting to those who love music by quoting verses of your favorite rap songs or gives you words of encouragement. The world is stressful right now and since I started painting again it’s given me hope and something to look forward to. When I started selling and sharing art, I saw that it made people happy or laugh, a positive reaction. I want to leave that behind when I’m long gone. There’s something about a glittery cupcake quoting Tupac or Wu-Tang, telling you that you’re doing a good job that brightens up your day.
What do you think about happiness?
Being able to do what I love and seeing people’s reactions makes me happy. I put so much of myself in my paintings and drawings that I hope people have a reaction. I love to be in my own space and be creative and add some glitter and smiles to what has become a stressful world. My paintings make me happy and I just want to share that with the world. The paint on my sleeves, the left-over glitter, the weirdness of the world makes me happy.
