Today we’d like to introduce you to Detrick Martin.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My brother (Chad Martin), my mother (Carol Martin), and I started our business Crafts From Trees three years ago. My father was a shop teacher so we naturally grew up in the shop. Chad is a master woodworker, my mother makes pine needle baskets, and I do wood carving with a rotary tool.
I taught myself how to carve and have developed my unique style. I specialize in comfort birds, mushrooms, and bonsai trees and try to add a new line each year. We set up crafts shows and farmers markets along the front range and in the mountains 2 to 3 times a month year-round.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Learning is never a smooth road. Since I am self-taught, there are always many tries and mistakes. I just continue to read, get advice from my brother, and try again!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work at creating my vision and am always improving on my designs.
At this time, I specialize in comfort birds, mushrooms, and bonsai trees using locally sourced woods, Colorado driftwood, and exotic woods from around the world. Products are finished with linseed oil—no stains are used.
