Check Out Devin Thomas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Thomas.

Hi Devin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started producing music when I was 16 years old. I tried to use my influences from hip-hop and rock music to help create a sound that was new for EDM. I primarily focus on Dubstep and experimental bass music. I started releasing music and knew that I had to start playing music live to start building an audience around my style. I entered a DJ competition when I was 21 and I won, which secured me a spot to play as an opener for a well-known DJ at the Roxy. Since then, I have been playing shows regularly in the Denver area and releasing music on all major platforms.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was a tough start, especially since I create a style that is not as popular as other genres of EDM. As I played more shows though, I was able to play a lot of my original music and get the exposure that way. Learning how to promote yourself through social media platforms has been my toughest challenge. I know I have a good product that will appeal to a large crowd, but getting your music in front of those people has been my toughest challenge. I have been steadily building since I started, but I am not where I want to be yet. But I have over 10k streams on Spotify and I am gaining some traction. I just need to stay focused and I think I will be alright. Hard work and discipline always pay off.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create Experimental bass music / Dubstep that has a unique sound. I try to find sounds that are common in other genres, but use them in a not common way while still making sure it has a good sound and a good groove to it. I focus on making music like I have never heard before, but wish I had. I think it’s important for artists to use other bodies of art as a reference, but build off of it to create something unique. I am not trying to copy anybody’s sound or style. I want to have my own sound and style so when you hear my song you think to yourself, ” Oh I bet this is Vytal Signs.” I think one of my strongest abilities is to actually create DJ sets that have a ton of variety. So, I can really control how the crowd responds and feels during my set. I am able to speed up the tempo and then go back down because my music is so formable to different genres. It is actually the number one thing people say to me about my live sets, they say, ” I love that it changes so much so it’s not just one type of music playing for an hour.”

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I find happiness through the validation of my music. If even one person comes to me and tells me that they liked my new song, then I know it was worth it. I create music for fun, I would be doing this even if no one knew my name or ever heard my songs. The studio is my ” happy place”, so it is where you will find me the majority of the time. But the fact that people do go out of their way to listen to my music and come to my shows is the best feeling in the world. I get the opportunity to play my creations live for people and watch them dance and have a good time to it, and that to me is the best feeling in the world.
