Today we’d like to introduce you to DNA Picasso.
DNA, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In a nutshell, I was born in New York alongside my twin brother in 1995. We were taken away from our mother at birth and placed in the foster care system where we lived in a few homes before finally getting adopted at five years old. Our new family lived in California so they came out to New York and we flew back across the country to our new home. Growing up. they worked hard to provide the things we needed but I had to find out ways to hustle for the things I wanted. Sometimes that hustle got me into sticky situations and involved with the law. Other times, I’ve been seriously rewarded for that hustle and effort. I played football and ran track&field in high school and ended up landing a Track&Field scholarship to Hastings College in Nebraska. After two years of college, I left to pursue music. Most people including family at times thought I was wild for making that decision and basically wished me luck. I was couch hoping, job-hopping, trying to get on my feet, and got lost in the daily hustle which led me to experimenting with alcohol and drugs. I had a phase that a lot of people don’t know about where drugs almost took my life, music saved it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not necessarily. At times, the road seem smooth but most times it’s a daily battle. There’s been all types of struggles along the way; from legal issues and industry politics to struggling to feed myself and record music at the same time. I’ve lost friends to drugs and have had huge falling outs with people I thought I could trust. I’ve hurt people, I’ve been hurt. I’ve taken huge losses. The amount of money spent while trying to figure out this music business can make this career path feel discouraging at times. It can make you want to quit and try something else even when you know your talent. You’ve got bills due and obligations but you’ve got to keep going and learning. The people who have won the most, know loss. It’s all a part of the game. Nothing about this life or journey is perfect but it’s worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a recording artist, songwriter, and record label owner. I’m a rapper known for my versatile song and music video catalogs. People also know me as a nightlife promoter and dot connector. I’m most proud of my ability to bring creatives together and make dope collaborative art. I love being at the forefront and in everyone’s camera but I also love pulling the strings behind the scenes.
What do you think about luck?
Luck has played a huge role in my life. I’m lucky to be alive. I’m lucky to be able to do what I love. The hard work and determination can’t change the fact that I’ve been lucky. Whether that means being in the right room, with the right person, at the right time or someone in my life thinking about me and putting out a referral to someone that may want to book me or write about me; just like the opportunity I now have being able to share my story with VoyageDenver.
