Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Dvorchak.
Hi Drew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I would say my musical journey to where I am today started briefly after I finished college. I was a D1 swimmer throughout all four years of college, which pretty much controlled my life. Once I graduated and finished my swimming career, I had a huge void in my life without sports. During this time, I was living at home in Chicago and pretty much reached an all time low. One day I finally decided ‘enough is enough, I need a new hobby’. I decided to pick up the guitar and teach myself how to play. Naturally, soon after I began writing my own songs. Fast forward a year or so later, after jumping the Twin Cities Open-Mics circuit for a few months, I played my first real gig ever in Minneapolis in January 2020; 1 week before the COVID pandemic lockdowns began. In the midst of COVID, I made the move out to Colorado – after a few years of lockdown, I finally found the return of live music to society in a town called Evergreen. There was a weekly Open-Jam going on at the Evergreen Brewery on Tuesday nights. I spent every Tuesday at there for the better part of the next year where I met some of the most influential people on my music career thus far, most notably Mark Swaim who has became a musical role model to me and one of my best friends. I didn’t know it at the time, but I soon found out Evergreen was absolutely flooded with incredible musicians and just about every weekend we would all reconvene at a house we called ‘The Ranch’ and jam all night until the sun would come up. In the midst of these hang outs/jam sessions, I ended up finding my future band mates and forming my first band ‘Voodoo Blue’. I look back and it’s hard to believe how lucky I was to find an absolute gold mine of musicians to learn from and shape who I am today as an artist. I still live in Evergreen today, and don’t see myself moving anytime soon as this place has made such a lasting impression on me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever smooth hah. There are always going to be challenges in everything you do, and as soon as you think you may have it all figured out something else will pop up out of nowhere. In the music industry there are a million things that can become a challenge, whether it is scheduling, writers block, ticket sales, etc. Recently, I have been in the middle of a summer tour of 30+ shows. With such a time commitment going to performing live shows, preparation, travel, I also work a full time job, etc., I have been really struggling to find time to write. With that being said, I have a long list of ideas to work into songs once this summer tour slows down. In addition, as a band we have plans to record an album to release by the end of the year. I have 5 songs from the album about half way completed, but it has been almost impossible to find a time for all of us to get together to make more progress on this until the tour finishes up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer, songwriter, guitarist. Of the 3, my personal favorite is playing the guitar. However, with that being said, I think what differentiates myself from others is my songwriter. I make a point to wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to songwriting, and every song I have ever wrote has came a personal experience. In the lowest moments of my life, I have found certain songs that relate to the situation I was in at that time and felt comfort in the idea that I am not alone. I keep this idea in the back of my head whenever I write any song, and I hope that the songs I write can provide comfort and solstice to others in challenging times.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love the most about Denver is how incredibly artsy the town is. Whether it is the the painting, the jewelry, the graffiti that beautifully coats the town or the extremely diverse music scene. All of it blows me away, and for such an outdoorsy state that is filled with majestic views, it really makes me smile to see how the people of Denver find ways to express themselves and share their experiences. The thing about Denver that makes me sad is how much it is growing. I grew up in Chicago and love the big city vibe, but that is not why I moved here. I was looking for something different. Now I know what everyone is thinking, “…..uhhh dude, you’re part of the problem!”. Yes, I realize how hypocritical I am sounding. All I am trying to say is I love Denver just the way it is right now, and I wish I could just take a mental snapshot of how it is now and live in these times.
