Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Gilbert.
Hi Eddie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got started off with what I call my Filmmaking and Photography Obsession making short videos for YouTube on my dad’s laptop webcam in high school. Just being a goofy kid; he eventually bought me my first camera a Canon 60D and I started working for him at my church making videos and taking photos. Through my first semester in college, my father then met a local filmmaker on set and I started editing for him and everything snowballed from there.
I came upon street photography by accident, One day I just got bored of taking photos of rocks and trees and decided to go downtown to 16th Street Mall to photograph people. I loved the adrenaline rush of fear from taking strangers’ pictures in this environment. It was soon after I discovered famous street photographers which has since furthered my interest in the art form.
Now I spend most of my days photographing in and around Denver and making YouTube content from it all. Merging both of my passions together and building a community through it all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been anything but smooth, it’s had its highs and lows mostly common struggles that many creatives today share. For me personally, as a POC I’ve unfortunately have had interactions that have soured some great experiences as a photographer and filmmaker, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have met the right people all through relationships starting with my father interacting with the guy who first hired me and continuing to put myself out there. I’m also working at understanding how I can best represent the black community through the way I carry myself and put my work and life out on the Internet.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known amongst my community as a filmmaker and photographer. My passion is to share my journey and experiences as a filmmaker and photographer and hopefully to create a community for other marginalized creatives to be able to have the opportunities I’ve had the fortune to experience. I love making YouTube videos about my street and documentary photography because I can fully communicate my vision at my pace while meeting great people and forming relationships along the way. I’m most proud of the work I’ve created surrounding my father, he passed away in April of 2021 very unexpectedly and I would spend a lot of my time working with him as he started my career and documenting him simply being a father and a grandfather and husband through photography.
