Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Miller
Hi Elise, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I went to college at Indiana University and knew right away I wanted to be a teacher. Spent 9 years in the public school system in Denver before I decided to have a family. I made the decision to stay home instead of going back to work. My days are spent in the sunshine reading books, playing in the grass, and going on walks or to the park. I wouldn’t change it for ANYTHING. However, I needed an outlet; something I could do in my spare time that gave me joy- bonus points if I’m able to monetize. Being that a lot of my friends and both sisters live across the country, we use varying social media apps to stay in touch. That got me thinking, “How can I use social media to my benefit since I’m already using the platforms daily?” I created a goal: post reels every day until brands start noticing. I started putting myself out there despite feeling embarrassed and awkward. Within a few months, brands started sending me gifted PR. I’ve learned soft skills like graphic design and video editing, and have learned how to market products so consumers feel encouraged to buy. I just received my first paid collaboration and I know it’s only going to keep getting better! What I’ve learned in these few months is “Fear of looking stupid is the only thing holding you back.” I just started getting involved in the Denver scene, promoting local businesses on Instagram and working with local vendors to market products or events. The only way is up!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning Instagram’s algorithm has been challenging. It’s almost a science. You have to be specific with number of posts per week, hashtags, tagging, timing of posting, engagement (brands particularly want to see this), etc. There is so much more to being an “influencer” than posting products and recommending clothes. I could spend an hour editing one video just for it to flop, and I could spend 10 seconds editing one that goes viral. It’s all very confusing and I’m still learning! The other struggle is finding the balance of screen time. I refuse to be a mom who is constantly on her phone while the kids are playing. I believe being a present parent is the best thing we can do for our children. So finding a schedule has been a big help in finding that balance!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create content for brands (reels, UGC, posts, stories, etc.) to market products and services. I also make relatable reels including the woes of motherhood, “deinfluencing”, and funny jokes poking at marriage. What sets me apart is the energy I bring! I bring the vibes with relateable humor, a cuss word here and there for satire, and a good dance move to show this momma’s still got it. I encourage a strong community of women to support one another and not take life too seriously!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m amazing at Sudoku and I’m a citizen of Finland. Also decent at snowboarding!
