Check Out Emmy Agustin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmy Agustin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from Honolulu, Hawaii and am the daughter of an immigrant mother as well as 3rd generation Hawaii born on my father’s side. I grew up with a lot of pressure to become successful in the field of medicine or even to join the military. I always wanted to do something with hair and beauty, but I never felt like it was something that my parents would be proud of coming from their immigrant background. So, I tried to continue to get their approval of my choices by going to school to pursue something in the hospital. Unfortunately, after achieving that goal and working in a Pediatric Trama Center for a year after completing my master’s degree, I was not happy. I decided to change my career path when I moved from Hawaii to Denver. I dabbled with some hospitality jobs and eventually became a Flight attendant. Then when COVID hit our industry rather hard in 2020, I decided to go back to school to pursue my passion from when I was a girl. I wasn’t always the prettiest, but I had a kind of art and I loved expressing myself through hair and makeup. I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2021 and realized that I am very good at helping others feel good about themselves while styling their hair. I volunteered at a few fashion shows and eventually started doing hair out of my neighbor’s salon. Without her trust and motivation for me to finally pursue my passion, this pandemic, and support from my friends as well as family, I wouldn’t have made it through the toughest time in our history. I can say that I made the best out of the struggles that COVID had brought into my life and made it even better!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were a few struggles to get to where I am today from financial stress and sacrifices to changes in relationships with others. I am one to always have a positive outlook in life no matter what comes my way and sometimes it hurts when I lose something or someone. I do not have regrets in anything that I have chosen to do until now, but without the courage to let go of my past and my guilt about money, I would have never made it to where I am now. It takes a lot of risks to become great!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently honing my craft in hair styling and coloring. I am very interested in runway, editorial, hairstyling, and braiding. I think what sets me apart is my personality and openness as a stylist. I am also very willing to listen to what the clients need all while making sure that it is also the best for them. Since I do have another job as a flight attendant, I do like to volunteer some of my time to help those in need and hopefully give back to my community with my talents.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am usually overly prepared when it comes to my craft and prior to being a backstage hairstylist, I was actually a model in my 20s. I decided that I would like to give back to the runway what I learned from my time as a model in Hawaii as well as share my positivity in the fashion industry as well as appreciation for diversity and culture!
