Today we’d like to introduce you to Erasmo Vasquez Jr.
Hi Erasmo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in an East Denver neighborhood and I spend much of my time at St. Charles Recreation Center. Sports have played an integral part in my life. I have played many sports at some level and the one sport that I never played at a high level was baseball but now I find myself coaching baseball for the last 7 years. It started with my oldest son Adin. He loved it since he could walk and I was learning something every day to try and help. When he turned 11 his coach asked if I could help and I fell in love with the process of teaching young children the game. Watching them go through the ups and downs of a sport that is primarily a failure sport is so gratifying.
Once Adin went to HS I decided to become the head coach of my younger son Evan. I have coached this team for the last 4 years, my wife Jacqueline coached them the first 2 years, and it has been a blast. I am very proud to say that we have 5 kids from the original team and this upcoming year we will have the same 12 players from last year. It will be the first year that we didn’t have to look for players.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a very tough road for me. I am by nature an introvert but when it comes to sports, I am very much outgoing and verbal. So when it comes to managing the team it is very difficult but my wife has been a huge supporter in helping me work with parents and all the things that come with running it.
When it comes to coaching, has been the most frustrating and rewarding at the same time. I have been very lucky to have other coaches help me out. One coach, Chayton Moore has helped this team tremendously with his knowledge and patience. He has coached them for 6 years.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work for the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation. I have worked there since Feb. 2007 and help manage their defensive driving programs, the main program is Alive at 25. I love that we are able to help young drivers and make our roads safer. 90% of our instructors are current or retired law enforcement officers.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
In my personal life, the person that deserves the most credit is my wife Jackie. She helps me with things people cannot see and I truly love her for that. I also love the support my mentor John Anderson gives me. He happens to be my boss, but the way he treats his employees you wouldn’t think that. I could go on forever with all the things he has helped me with but the main one is how he has always taught me that family always comes first.
In coaching, all the coaches and friends have helped me along the way. A big thank you to Lex Rodriguez for giving me the chance and encouragement to coach, I don’t think I would have done it if it wasn’t for him.
