Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Gibbons Queen of Air.
Hi Gina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been at the forefront of my life. I grew up with two musical parents, my mom being a professional singer during the 80s, who also taught voice and movement classes throughout my childhood, while my dad is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist with a deep love for rock n’ roll. For me, music has always been connected to my love of dance. Though I’ve gone through many musical phases, the common thread among my most beloved styles of music is that they make me move! I’ve always loved ‘dance music’ and eventually started to hear particular styles of house and techno that inspired me to want to start sharing this flavor of electronic music. One day I bought the gear and decided to give it a go…
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, yes, surprisingly, yes! I feel very blessed to have been so supported by my peers, community and family since day one. Of course, learning the tech aspect initially was somewhat challenging and intimidating on my own, but for now I just accept where I am knowing I still have lots to learn and I actually enjoy that process now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Having spent countless hours dancing in clubs, at concerts and movement classes, I really am a dancer first and foremost. My love of music is deeply intertwined with my love of dance and this greatly informs my work. If I don’t LOVE a track, if it doesn’t make me move, I won’t play it. This sifting process is not done through the mind but instead is a very intuitive and visceral experience that I can’t exactly put words to. People have told me, “you have a great ear”, but really, I just let my own body guide and inform what and how I play.
People have shared such kind and profound reflections after dancing to my sets. Though all vary in context, common themes I hear are transportive, uplifting and healing. I never directly set out to do any of this, but that is the power of music. I am very inspired by the stars, the cosmos and the mysterious, unseen elements of Life that only music could possibly reach.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I DJ throughout the Boulder and Denver area at various clubs and events throughout the year. The type of space and event vary greatly, typically a little something for everyone. I also host my own seasonal outdoor parties in the foothills when the weather is warm. The best way to support is to come out and dance!
