Check Out Grayson Certain’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grayson Certain.

Hi Grayson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started in 2014 burning geometric patterns in to little plaques from hobby lobby. Then I got a saw and started making little things and then another saw and a sander etc. and now I have a whole woodshop full of tools. I used to work full time painting interior office buildings and then woodworking in the evenings until in 2016 I quit to start working for myself full time. It hasn’t been easy, sometimes it’s been the hardest thing ever but it’s definitely worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road; I haven’t ever had any formal training so I’ve just learned everything through trial and error and watching YouTube videos. And being somewhere the weather changes so drastically so quickly, wood likes to warp which can be extremely frustrating. I’ve stressed out about projects so bad that I developed health problems from not being able to handle my stress load. But I have learned a ton and wouldn’t change any of it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Over the last several years I’ve found some cool ways to recycle old skateboards. Some of the things I’m most proud of are an 8-person dining table and chairs I made from skateboards and walnut. Sculptures ranging from a couple inches tall to over 6 feet tall. And I’m currently building a 15’ canoe out of skateboards. I like to think my work sets me apart from others, I do my best to create the most original pieces I possibly can.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Ambition. I believe it’s super important to be ambitious and to take on goals that might even seem out of reach. To have something specific to work towards and for that something to push you to become better. Whether that’s better at your craft or getting stronger or being a better person. There are always ways to improve and I think it takes ambition to act on that.
