Today we’d like to introduce you to Gus Erickson.
Hi Gus, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Founded in Utah, Epic Brewing Company is Utah’s first brewery since prohibition to brew exclusively high alcohol content beer. We handcraft and carefully bottle and can our unique product, ensuring high-quality, fresh, and extremely flavorful beer in small quantities with unending varieties. Epic uses only the finest malts from the US and Europe, intense hops, and triple filtered water. Discover natural variations of taste, from sweet malt, citrus, pine, oak, smoke to chocolate, coffee, vanilla to cinnamon, to most anything Epicurean you can imagine. Whether you are a casual beer drinker or an adventurous connoisseur, Epic is perfect for every palate.
In 2013, Epic Brewing Company adventured to the River North (RiNo) Art District of Denver, Colorado. In doing so, we expanded our reach to better serve the Rocky Mountain region, which allowed us to escapade its way from coast to coast. The RiNo district was made famous by its artistic diversity and maintained its status with an influx of breweries, restaurants, and coffee houses alike. Our Denver Taproom now boasts two spacious patios. One on the south side of the building, guarded by an olive-green fence, and the other taking over the sidewalk right along Walnut Street. Come hang out on our spacious patios where you can often catch a ton of sun in the early afternoon, a beautiful sunset at night, and a terrific Denver skyline any time of day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d be worried if it was a smooth road! Having opened over a decade ago, there have been ups and downs along the way. With our origins in Utah, we’ve had to duck and dodge a little more than a handful of arcane laws. One of the weirdest laws is that any beer higher than 5% ABV is illegal to be poured on tap or sold in grocery stores. This makes planning difficult because we can’t sell the same beer to bars and grocery stores. It primarily laws like this that pressured us to make our escape to Colorado’s beautiful RiNo neighborhood. The addition allowed us to brew more beer, legally serve our beer on our taps, and most importantly immerse ourselves in Colorado’s renowned beer community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My role at Epic Brewing as Marketing Specialist is primarily to work with the sales team to develop material to help Epic move beer off the shelf and into customers’ hands. My day-to-day tasks include writing press releases, managing our electronic media, building relationships with other local organizations, and more, but it’s not uncommon for brewery employees to wear many hats. I also help with other things like ordering merch and responding to customer complaints. I basically give a helping hand wherever it’s needed.
One project I’m especially proud of is our video project. Back when I first joined the team in 2020 someone proposed we create short videos to accompany each of our monthly beer releases. It has been a lot of fun taking a unique beer and translating it into visual entertainment. Fourteen months into the project, it has involved brewers, cellarmen, packaging team, bartenders, and local videographers from Denver and Salt Lake City! Turns out, one of the guys from the Salt Lake City team is also an actor and he has been absolutely killing it as the star of most of the videos. All in all, the crew has been having a lot of fun and we hope our patrons are, too!
