Check Out Haley Turner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Turner.

Hi Haley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself and sharing how you got started?
Hi, I’m Haley, an independent hairstylist in Glenwood Springs. I enrolled in beauty school in January of 2014, hoping to kickstart a career full of freedom and creativity.

My first job after I got licensed was at a commission salon in Carbondale. I spent a couple of years there learning and gaining experience and confidence. I then rented a booth at a couple different salons before landing at my current salon in Glenwood Springs, where I have been for the last 3 years.

What I didn’t realize when I made the leap from commission to booth renting was that I had literally no business or marketing knowledge whatsoever. I have spent the last 5 years deeply immersing myself in that area of my business and it has allowed me to create the life and career I dreamed of.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve had two babies since I became licensed and trying to balance a whole new life as a mom while trying to grow a business at the same time has been extremely challenging. Staying present, consistent and disciplined in all areas of my life is a must.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in bronde and dimensional color using balayage and foilayage techniques. I’m also known for using high-quality natural hair colors and products.

Balayage and “rooty” looks were just becoming a thing when I went to school, so these techniques that 90% of my clients ask for now, were not taught to me in school. My first balayage was absolutely AWFUL. It still keeps me awake at night when I think about it haha! But, I put in the hard work to learn and perfect these techniques, and now I can say I’m very proud of my craft.

As far as natural haircare goes, I began to develop allergies to the chemicals used in hair products early on in my career. I became an ingredient stickler and I only use products with the purest, highest quality ingredients. I like to encourage my clients to pay attention to what’s in their products and think about if it’s healthy to be putting on their bodies.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
My advice to those just starting out would be to find other stylists that share your passions and goals. There can be a lot of catty, competitive women in the industry that want to see you fail. Find people who will inspire and encourage you and celebrate your success.
