Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Knight-Lang.
Hi Jake, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Jake and I’m 31 years old. I graduated from CU Denver with a Bachelor’s in English: Film Studies. Before that Red Rocks Community College, where I got an art associate degree.
I’ve been working as a photographer/ videographer for 3 1/2 years now. Photography and videography have been hobbies of mine for nearly fifteen years, it’s really just in the last four years I’ve been trying to make a living from them.
This aforementioned paradigm shift happened after my father passed. Thats when I realized I wanted to document everything and help other do the same. We never know when life will throw a curve ball at us and change everything in minutes. So it’s important to document and remember those special moments, before they’re all gone and we don’t have anything left besides fickle memories to reassure us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not always. My father got cancer while I was still in college and passed away shortly after I graduated. Taking care of him and myself during that while having to finish a bachelor’s degree was tough. At the same time, COVID shut down everything so I had to finish my degree remotely.
Now everything is becoming so much more expensive and people just aren’t buying that many things anymore, including pictures and videos.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I photograph/ record weddings, events and musical venues mainly. I don’t know if I have an obvious specialty, I’m more a jack of all traits that has a hand in a lot of separate niches. I’ve captured corporate portraits, psychedelic long exposure portraits, sports, car photo shoots, pet photography, nature photos and videos, and the list goes on. I’m all over the place really. Then recently I started a YouTube channel all about exploring nature and adventuring outside.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was insanely introverted and shy. Im still very introverted but I know how to be more normal’ish now. I loved to skateboard and play video games. Really anything that distracted me from my crippling anxiety. I played a lot of World of Warcraft.
