Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Waters.
Hi Jalen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Hi, my name is Jalen Waters and I am a portrait photographer located in Atlanta, Georgia. I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and my love for photography started when I wanted to be an architect. I always loved going downtown when I was little and looking at how buildings were designed and built.
Unfortunately, as a kid, you don’t have access to a phone to take pictures with. Fast forward to my high school years, I started getting into photography when I had someone ask me to take pictures for them for their birthday party. I officially opened up Jaywatersphotographyscene on January 10, 2020, before COVID-19 took over. I have since moved from Denver to Atlanta, but I do travel back home once a quarter to build my connections.
One person who inspires me the most to continue to work on my photography is my sister. She is a makeup artist and esthetician student and she has helped me get back into being consistent with my work because she has me capture behind-the-scenes video footage as well as capturing before and after shots for her and her clients.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Photography is such a huge industry which means there is a lot of competition involved. One of the biggest issues that I currently have is getting traction on my social media platforms, as well as more people utilizing my website.
Trust is another issue because you can’t have a business without trust; However, there are a lot of people whom I have come across since my business journey who have not necessarily been business savvy. My advice is to pay attention to how people talk and that will determine if they are going to benefit you or not.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My main and I would say the best photos I take are portrait shots. I am known for playing around with vibrant colors and mixing looks to create a fun look when the final photo is ready. One thing I am the most proud about is the fact that yes I may not have steady traffic yet, but I am utilizing the time I have to continue to practice my work so when harder shoots come, I will be prepared for the challenge.
I believe one thing that sets me apart is the fact I can play around and master other editing programs besides Photoshop. I believe learning at least 3 different programs will help you to know not only how each one works, but you can master all types of editing skills using different programs for different looks.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I just want to thank everyone who will be taking the time to learn my story and journey. I hope this interview not only helps me gain more traffic in Denver but eventually leads to more traffic in Atlanta as well.
