Check Out Jarka Haan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarka Haan.

Hi Jarka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It was not my dream or a plan to become a pet photographer. It just evolved naturally after I got my first puppy and wanted to take pictures of him. I was not happy with all the blurry pictures I took of him. I realized I need to learn photography so I took photography courses and practiced, practiced, practiced, and studied some more. Soon enough, I had friends asking me to take pictures of their dogs. That’s when I realized I can help other people and started Paw Print Memories Photography in 2015. Pets are such a huge part of our lives and I believe we need to capture the beautiful moments we share with them. Their first day home, their growing up, their adventures, their beautiful personalities. We need to capture their memories so that they can be with us forever.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is never a smooth road, especially in photography. There is a lot of photographers out there. Find your passion and focus on crafting your style. But pet photographers do face an additional struggle: finding clients who think of their pets as family members. People hire professional photographers to capture important milestones in their lives, such as their engagement, their wedding, a birth of their first baby, the baby’s first year, a family reunion, etc. People don’t generally think about milestones like that with their pets. Many people start thinking about hiring a pet photographer once they realize their beloved pet is getting old and sick. The job of a pet photographer is to create forever memories of your beloved pet.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
There are so many photographers out there these days. Each type of photography requires a different skill set. I will never be able to photograph your wedding. I can’t photograph your family reunion. But I for sure can capture sweet images of your pets just because I worked really hard on this one skill. I pride myself in taking happy and colorful images of pets. My sessions all primarily outdoors, in the natural environment that truly highlights the personality and character of your dog. Also, I specialize in digital paintings. Maybe you lost your pet some time ago and the only image you have is a cell phone picture. I can take your cell phone picture and turn it into a fine art painting that you can proudly display on your walls. My main goal is to provide pet owners with memories of their pets that they can cherish forever.

What makes you happy?
I’m a huge animal lover. So interacting with any type of an animal is a dream come true for me. That’s why I love being a pet photographer. I will not remember your name, but I will for sure remember the name of your dog. During our session, I kind of forget about the people around and focus on your dog. Is he comfortable? Is he having fun? I often grin as I edit the final images. And when I deliver them, I get butterflies in my stomach watching the clients get teary as they preview the slideshow of their dog’s pictures. Pets are happiness. And people who love their pets make me happy.
