Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Castro
Hi Jean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am an integral artist born in Caracas, Venezuela, and my journey in the world of art began at an early age with painting. As a child, I was fascinated by the ability of colors and shapes to tell stories and express emotions. Later, I discovered my passion for music through singing, and that’s when I knew I had found another powerful way to connect with the world.
As I grew older, I trained as a journalist and graphic designer, but I never abandoned music. I participated in several musical groups, most notably “Malegua,” with whom we recorded two albums that I still cherish dearly.
The political situation in my country led me to emigrate to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I earned a degree in Cinematography. During those years, although I was away from creating music, I immersed myself in my career as a photographer and visual artist, participating in various films, documentaries, and Latin American art exhibitions. It was an enriching phase that broadened my artistic vision.
After a short period in Brazil, I moved to France and worked at an audiovisual production company, which allowed me to explore another angle of art. In late 2019, I arrived in the United States, and shortly after, the COVID-19 pandemic began. That period was especially challenging: without work and completely isolated, I found a refuge in music.
In my improvised home studio, I began experimenting with sounds and creating my first productions, and thus “El Santo and The Mean Machine” was born. Under this artistic name, I have released two EPs and several singles, and I have been fortunate enough to have many of my productions signed by different record labels around the world.
Currently, I am delving into the vibrant electronic music scene in Denver as a DJ. It hasn’t been easy, but I have already had the opportunity to play alongside some great international and local DJs. This journey has been a mosaic of experiences and lessons that have helped me grow not only as an artist but also as a person.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been an easy path. The world of art, in any of its facets, is a tough road to navigate. I have had to live in several countries and learn multiple languages, adapting to different cultures. I am someone who embraces challenges, but that doesn’t mean it has been simple.
Music, in particular, is a form of expression that transcends language barriers. Music itself is a universal language, which makes it so powerful and accessible. However, having to learn English and face all the limitations that come with it, in addition to being a complete unknown, has meant that I have had to work very hard to begin carving out a place for myself in the challenging world of electronic music.
Each country and culture has taught me something new, and while it has been a constant challenge, it has also been an incredibly enriching experience. These obstacles have shaped my art and made me more resilient. Now, looking back, I see how each struggle has been a key piece in my development as an artist and as a person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a music producer and DJ known as “El Santo and The Mean Machine,” specializing in House music, specifically in the subgenres of afro house, latin house, and tech house. I am very proud that my music is transcending borders and that through it, I can connect with people. Art is proof that humans are incredible beings, and knowing that my beats can make people dance and connect with each other makes me very happy.
Additionally, I have had the opportunity to connect with various music producers around the world, with whom I have collaborated on productions, most of which have already been released. I believe that what truly sets my music apart is the experimentation with Latin American rhythms. I am not afraid to let my roots be part of my style; in fact, I love knowing that everything I have lived through can be felt in my music.
I am proud to be able to fuse my experiences and cultural heritage into every track I create. This not only defines me as an artist but also allows me to offer something unique and authentic to my listeners. Seeing people enjoy and connect with my music is undoubtedly one of the greatest satisfactions I can experience.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I believe that the most important thing is passion; loving what you do drives us to be authentic. For me, one of the most valuable aspects of what I do is the connection that music creates between people. Music creates an environment where everyone can be free, without prejudices or labels. It is a universal language that unites people in ways that few things can. Seeing how my music can make people feel more connected and free is, without a doubt, what matters most to me and motivates me every day.
