Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Althaus.
Hi Jeff, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
There are far too many occurrences of families tearing each other’s throats out after a loved one passes away. Death truly can bring out the worst in people, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Our goal at Althaus Law is to stop those fights, keep entire families out of court, and allow individuals to leave a legacy to those they love the most, rather than having the state come in to take their estate.
Attorney Jeff Althaus worked for the Deputy Public Administrator in Adams County, a little-known office that handles many court-appointed probate cases and estate planning matters. At this office is where he learned what goes wrong in people’s estate planning that leads the family into expensive court battles. He knew he could make better plans for people that would stop them from ever ending up in court, and help to hold families together even after the parents passed away.
With that goal of avoiding court and protecting families in mind, he started in a small office in Northglenn, Colorado, of less than 300 square feet. It has since grown with the great community to over 4,500 square feet. We now have four estate planning lawyers and a paralegal that work their tails off to make sure people are protected and that their children will be safe for generations to come.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road for Althaus Law has been riddled with pot holes. One of the main ones being Covid-19. The business had to shut down for a brief stint in 2020 due to the statewide restrictions. However, we bounced back stronger than ever and adapted to a new and virtual world.
Due to Covid, we now offer many meetings virtually. This enables us to involve the entire family in the process. Kids can zoom in from across the country to ask questions about what their role will be should the worst happen. Relatives are able to join if needed as well. In the end, we have always used our challenges to create even better successes. We hope to continue down that road!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our firm specializes in Estate Planning and Probate matters. Focusing on only these areas of law allows us to stay up to date on the best strategies for protecting our clients and their family. With estate planning, we are able to draft wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, and more to transfer assets after passing away and helping to protect them while you are still alive. This area of law is the only way you can keep your family out of court after you pass. It can also help those with minor children avoid foster care.
If there is an unfortunate situation where no plan was ever put in place and a loved one is lost, you will end up in court in what is called Probate. This process is very costly (thousands of dollars) and can take many months to years to get through. We can help families through this process as well to make sure the estate is protected from creditors and that it goes through the courts as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As a religious person, I truly believe our success is guided by God. We have a deep appreciation of people of all faiths at our firm, and would never deny assistance based on any religion.
We also have an amazing team that has grown into a family. We care about each other, we care about the community, and we help those around us as if they were our own family.
