Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Anderson.
Jenna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my photography career in 2012 as an assistant for a well-known wedding photographer in my home town of Fargo, ND. Assisting turned into second-shooting, which led to shooting my first solo wedding in 2015. Since then, I’ve photographed countless family sessions, maternity sessions, couples sessions, newborn sessions, senior sessions and several more weddings. While it’s always been my goal to become a full-time wedding photographer, having a baby changed my perspectives and shifted my focus towards family and motherhood photography and away from wedding photography. As a mother, it brings me so much more joy and purpose to capture the fleeting moments of childhood and each family’s unique journey because as every parent knows, it doesn’t last nearly long enough.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel as though I’ve faced many of the “normal” challenges that small business owners and photographers alike face, such as starting over in a new state, gaining clientele, and dealing with a few difficult clients. However, nothing has proven to be as challenging as balancing being a stay-at-home mom and operating a business! Finding the time to edit, respond to emails, keep up with social media and accomplish other business tasks with a toddler demanding every second of my attention has definitely been a learning process!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My approach to photography is rooted in honesty and authenticity. I don’t believe in cookie-cutter sessions or stiff, unnatural poses. Instead, I focus on capturing the raw, unscripted moments that tell the truest story of who you are and what you’re experiencing right now. Whether it’s the way your child’s eyes light up when they play with you, the pure joy of a spontaneous family hug, or the quiet bond you share with your partner during those late-night feedings—my goal is to create photos that will make you feel something every time you look at them. I believe the reason I’m able to do this is because I am a mother myself and I know what moments and details are the most cherished to me. Lastly, my favorite part of being a photographer and what makes me feel the most proud is getting to witness emotional reactions to seeing my work, or receiving kind words from my clients about how much they love their photos—those things will always make my heart flutter!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
If I find the time, I love listening to the podcast Passion with Purpose by Nathan Chanski! I’ve learned a lot of business strategies and other photography education through his podcast and social media.
