Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Divitto.
Hi Jenny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well hello, my name is Jenny (AKA Moonchild) and my initial obsession with candles started in high school. I worked at a local candle store in the mall, and that is when I learned about candles, candle making, and proper candle care. Flash forward to my mid-thirties, when I discovered the candles I was burning in my home were extremely toxic and were causing me to suffer horrendous headaches, head congestion, and even nausea! So, determined to make a better candle, I set out on a mission to make a clean version of my favorite candle scents.
I dove into the art of candle making, learning, researching, and failing miserably. The beautiful thing about failures and frustrations, is they are all a gift along the path that eventually lead me to the formula that I still use today. Candle-making remained a hobby for many years until the pandemic hit. With all that quality time at home, my creative juices kicked into high gear. That’s when I decided to take a leap of faith and officially start Moonchild Candle Co. in the Fall of 2020. It was important to me to develop a product free of all toxic chemicals and phthalates, so you could feel good about filling your home with a safe, non-toxic, clean burning scent.
We are surrounded by all kinds of chemicals penetrating every aspect of our lives, and many people experience several health concerns. Moonchild candles are hand poured in small batches. This helps to ensure the highest quality product for consumers who are looking for a luxury candle, but more importantly a safe candle. One thing I’ve learned, is you get what you pay for with products. Personally, I have no problem paying more for a high-quality product I can trust is safe for my loved ones.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Time and capital is my biggest challenge at this point. I have a 20-year career as a school administrator and a single Mom to a 16-year-old daughter. These constraints limit how quickly I can grow the business, and the different opportunities I can reasonably take on. I just go with the flow, and let go of any expectations for my small business. When expansion opportunities are in alignment with my vision and mission, and I have the space, capacity, and passion for it, I’ll go for it. So far, this approach has been wonderful and full of abundance. At some point, I would love to open a Moonchild Candle Studio & Boutique Collective for other local women artists or businesses to showcase and sell their products. I’m a firm believer that we rise by lifting others.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The name Moonchild Candle Co. originates from a pseudo or nickname I’ve had for many years. My horoscope sign is Cancer, and our ruling planet is the Moon; therefore we are often referred to as Moonchild(ren). I am a Colorado native and enjoy paddleboarding, yoga, hiking, camping, concerts, and skiing in my free time. I also like to sleep, enjoy long soaks in the bathtub, have an obscene number of houseplants, have an unhealthy obsession with Freebird boots & Mac Miller, and have two labrador retrievers.
