Today we’d like to introduce you to JG.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
At a young age, I watched my pop freestyle with his friends and always watched them rap when they partied. That’s when I learned how to freestyle. Growing up later when I was in high school, I would freestyle with my brother Uriah. I started actually making the music at 19 in my college dorm with my friends I played college football with. I was a dual sport athlete (running track/playing football) at the South Dakota School of Mines.
At first, making music was for fun, and to pass the time when we didn’t feel like studying. But, I found a love for the process. I loved hearing my voice on instrumentals. From there, I started finding studios whenever I would come back to Denver from school. Once I started recording in a professional studio, my love for making music skyrocketed.
At 20, I recorded my first album. My goal was that every time I went to the studio, I had to top the last song I made. I would write lyrics every day; to the point where hanging up the track spikes and the football cleats became a reality in my life. My passion for music truly came from my heart. I knew that making music was a thing that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Fast forward five years later, my discography is huge as an independent artist, and my production is over 90% self-produced. I switch from multiple genres and have a passion for being as versatile as I can. I feel like I have grown exponentially as an artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making and creating music has never been a smooth road. I’ve learned so many things in the music industry. Especially at a time when social media is the biggest influence on getting yourself heard by a wide audience. I have had times where I felt I wasn’t getting the love I deserved, or that I was being overlooked for my style of music/rap.
I have doubted my abilities and even had times when I would try and compare myself to others. That really took a toll on me; I wasn’t being my own biggest critic and I was falling into the trap of listening to what others wanted from me. I have lost friends, business partners, and family who really didn’t see the direction I wanted to go with my music and business.
In the end, I have learned from all of that; that it’s not about what people want from me. It’s what I want for myself and it’s about the music I love to record. It’s about building relationships with genuine people.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer/rapper/producer. I feel like I’m most known for my high energy on stage and versatility. I make music that’s hip-hop, R&B, punk, metal, EDM, and reggaeton. I love just creating music that catches my ear and love switching it up. I really focus on not trying to put myself in a category or a box. I’m most proud of self-producing my music.
For me, I feel like it makes my music even more original and something that you haven’t heard before. I take pride in trying to be the best artist I can possibly be and always trying to get better every time I get on stage or get in the studio. What sets me apart from others is my versatility, and I stand by that. I can switch my genres pretty easily and I try and make it my own style.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a wild little kid. I was full of energy and always trying to make people laugh. I was a class clown and my teachers always had something to say to my mom and pops. My pops introduced me to hip-hop and a very young age and I probably knew more about hip-hop than a young kid should have.
I grew up tough being one of the youngest of my cousins. That’s just how it went in the neighborhood. My main focus as a kid was playing sports. Football was an everyday thing for me starting at 7 years old. That was my main focus besides school until I was 20 years old. As a kid, I was just crazy. I feel like I still am.
