Today we’d like to introduce you to John DiGirolamo.
John DiGirolamo is a critically acclaimed author, speaker, and anti-human trafficking advocate. His latest book, It’s Not About the Predator: A Parent’s Guide to Internet & Social Media Safety is a practical 30-page booklet to help keep kids safe online. The book details the predator’s playbook, grooming tactics, and specific proactive actions for parents. It also includes tips from an undercover police officer and summarizes how pornography feeds predators.
John also wrote the book It’s Not About the Sex (2022), which featured stories from rural and suburban America, seeking to shine a light on and create awareness of the evils of human trafficking. DiGirolamo previously wrote It’s Not About the Badge (2021), a creative nonfiction book that profiles the human side of policing, featuring rural officers.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Although I believe my content is relevant, a book for parents that is a guide about internet safety, it has been difficult to get in front of parent\school groups to provide free training. It is great that with technology, it is easy to self-publish as I did with Amazon. It is difficult to get any publisher’s attention so having the ability to do that on my own is an opportunity that I took full advantage of.
I sell my books in two ways. I have been able to book myself on several podcasts to talk about my books, and that helps drive sales and awareness. Also, I do presentations, anywhere from the library, church groups, Rotary and other organizations and I sign books afterward. It is great to interact with readers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My third book, It’s Not About the Predator is a practical 30-page guide for parents about the dangers of online predators. This follows my book on human trafficking, It’s Not About the Sex. My training is targeted at parents, educators, and the general public. It takes about 75-90 minutes, including time for Q&A and I discuss the following:
1. How predators approach teens online.
2. Real examples of predator tactics to exploit kids\teens.
3. Grooming signs.
4. Tips for parents and ways to protect your child.
5. Is social media safe?
6. What an undercover police officer wants parents to know.
7. How teens circumvent parental controls on electronic devices.
8. How pornography and our culture feed sexting, extortion & human trafficking.
9. What is human trafficking: Misperceptions vs. Reality.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I went to 3 different high schools, so I learned to be self-sufficient as it was difficult to make new friends. I enjoyed reading. I always had a creative side even though I chose a profession like accounting. I graduated from Fresno State University in 1987 and went into public accounting in San Jose, CA.
This was a great time to be a professional in Silicon Valley and be involved in the high-tech boom. I spent my professional career in finance and operations. In 2006, I moved to Broomfield, CO and eventually moved up to the mountains. I eventually retired and returned to my interest in being an author.
