Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Southwell.
Hi Jon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I’ve always loved taking pictures and I’ve always wanted to be a photographer but wasn’t sure where to start. Earlier this year our friends were getting married and they asked me to take their pictures! I was honored when they asked and I gladly accepted. I’ve slowly built a following and a website since and moving forward growing my business.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
So far the road has been somewhat smooth. I’ve worked with a handful of families and a handful of seniors for pictures. Word of mouth is huge and social media has been pretty helpful. I guess the main struggle will be continuing to gain clients, and balancing my real job with photography, eventually, I would love to just take pictures as my main job. I really want to get in the wedding game but there are so many photographers out there.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love taking portraits and just engaging with families. Being able to connect with a family and taking photos year after year for them. Family portraits and senior pictures are what have been fueling the fire currently but would love to open the door to more opportunities. I’m proud of the final product that my customers can look back on for a long time. What sets me apart from others is that I pay attention to detail and the landscape to provide the best backdrop with the natural light and lay of the land.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Photography is evolving over and over again. It has too many lovers, some are professionals, some have photography as their hobby, and some are just enthusiasts. Somehow, photography is hitched with many if not all. I feel AI is making a big impact on things and changing the game heavily in a good way. The things you can do with AI are fascinating, I’ve noticed so many new trends that people are doing and it’s pretty amazing.
