Hi Jonny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Boogie Boys was founded by me & my best friend Joel in honor of our close friend “A-Boogie” Avery who passed away, the studio carries his name as a way of keeping his memory alive. Before tattooing, Joel and I worked at a grocery store together, and after a tragic car accident that took our friends life and left Joel in a coma, we made the decision to build something meaningful in his honor. Neither of us came from a traditional tattoo background—we were completely self-taught artists who believed there was room for a different kind of studio. We wanted to move away from the intimidating atmosphere many people associate with tattoo shops and instead create a place where clients feel genuinely welcomed, listened to, and excited about the experience. Today, Boogie Boys is built around that idea, from the relaxed environment with vintage surround sound and video games to an approach that puts the client’s vision first. More than anything, we hope people leave remembering not just their tattoo, but how comfortable & cared for they felt while getting it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges was starting from scratch. Joel and I were completely self-taught, and had no startup money. Opening the business meant learning licensing, regulations & marketing on our own, while continuing to grow as artists. On top of that, we wanted to challenge the stereotype of the tattoo shop by creating a space that genuinely feels welcoming & client-focused. It wasn’t easy, but seeing people travel from across the country for our work and hearing clients say they felt comfortable here makes every challenge worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in blackout tattooing, fine line & micro realism, with blackout restoration becoming the area I’m best known for. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to build an incredible clientele, and many of my blackout clients travel from across the country to have me fix their blackout tattoos. Those projects are especially meaningful because they allow me to help people regain confidence in tattoos they once felt stuck with. I believe what sets me apart is a combination of technical experience, an honest client-first approach, and a commitment to making every person feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door until the tattoo is finished.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are just hanging out with my closest friends, you could spend hours doing something without realizing how much time has passed.
