Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiah Arment
Hi Josiah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a child around 5 or 6 years old with heavy inspirations from Michael Jackson and Prince. I came from a musical family on my father’s side and at 5 years old I was performing in churches and venues all over Vail and Aspen Colorado. I think that’s when I felt the deepest connection with a vision bigger than myself, a calling that drove me for years to where I’m at now. I knew I was on this Earth for something greater, different colors and sounds than the rest of the world is used to. I’ve been musical my whole life, playing guitar, keyboard and went to college for music production. Two years back I discovered acting and modeling. From there my inspirations and visions grew. I now had a new canvas to fill. A new approach towards visions I was trying to portray. After training with a modeling and acting school for a few years I quickly took off and jumped into daytime television, commercials, Denver Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and countless fashion shows. I’ve networked with many amazing photographers and along the way have taken so much inspiration from cinema and different fiction. Two years of being a piece in other’s visions I began to put together my own photoshoots and designs of my own clothing line. Many photoshoots are what I could encapsulate as dreams of mine; whether barefoot on a sand dune under the stars or lost deep in the city free falling from your own imagination and perception of the world. I do visual projects like these based on the inner feelings I have towards something or someone. Artwork comes from an artist’s own unique perception of the world. For some photoshoots I take inspiration from movies and directly apply it with my own twist. I’ve always been deeply in love with horror movies and the horror genre. Unlike other movie genres; horror is the only one where you can get a mix of all genres within it. You could have moments of comedy, drama at the same time. As an actor, one of my biggest goals is to star in a horror movie soon! In the meantime this latest shoot was based off of the psychological thriller American Psycho. Each picture has it’s own unique meaning spun off of the original with my own twists.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely been a bumpy, rough road. I’ve struggled for years with mental health and still do. Concepts of my perceptions of the world distorted by trauma, different religious views and a painful amount of hate I’ve endured throughout my life. I’ve always been a kind soul and for anyone with a kind soul there’s much of the world that will take advantage of that. These struggles have built some resistance in any modeling I do and sometimes when I perform. It’s a battle I’m still fighting hard in but the art is my own release of tension and pain as well as inspiring others on my journey. I came from an abusive family, never had many friends and to this day my trust issues are through the roof. However if I can inspire others who are also in similar or worse situations to rise up and be who they were meant to be then I’m happy.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m most proud of being myself, not conforming to the trends but instead setting them. Even if it gives me hate from others I’d rather be myself. I believe that is the biggest thing that sets me apart. I have my own style of clothing or the way I wear my hair, I perform R&B while the majority of the music scene in Denver is Hip Hop or Rap, I choose to be kind where in some settings being callous or rude is the social norm. I ultimately believe that if everyone was themselves wholeheartedly then the world would have so much more creativity that would equal happiness. It’s definitely okay to set trends but life in itself is about change and always exploring new things, new ways to project a vision. Constant new visions are what keeps creativity going.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My best advice is to be yourself. Do what inspires you, show kindness in all that you do. Don’t do something just because it is what everyone else is doing, do it because YOU want to and YOU see yourself doing it. Follow what makes your heart smile. Things that bring you joy and make you feel accomplished. The lifestyle you want is your purpose.
