Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Mark.
Hi Julie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey started at 8 years old on a family vacation to Georgia. My grandma gave me a disposable camera to use on the trip & I have been hooked ever since. Over the years, I used a variety of handheld digital cameras to capture memories of my friends & family. When I was a freshman in high school, I started taking film photography classes & developing my skills as an artist behind the camera. Photography was always just a hobby for me. Exploring the outdoors is another one of my favorite hobbies, so nature has always been my favorite subject. About 9 years ago, I started doing family photography. Since then I have photographed weddings, expecting parents, high school seniors, business owners, & events. My true passion is my landscape & wildlife photography. You can find me at local Maker’s Markets selling prints of my artwork. Large canvases, matted prints, postcards, magnets, stickers, & tote bags are just a few of the items I offer for sale. My biggest project that I do is an annual wall calendar with beautiful scenes from around Colorado. 2026 will be my 6th year doing this project! I never thought that I would be where I am today in my photography journey. It feels so surreal that people want to hang my photos in their home. I am thankful everyday for the chance to share my art with the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am has not always been smooth. Working as a small business owner & artist is difficult when you are just getting started. I have had to put my photography business on the back burner several times in order to take take jobs to make ends meet. Over the past few years, I have been able to find consistency with my photography business & I am finally starting to feel like I am on the right track to finding my groove as an artist. Investing in my business is really the thing that has helped me to grow the most. Even if I have to do it slowly, it is all adding up over time to make a difference. Looking back at what my photography booth looked like at events 5 years ago compared to what it looks like now is a visible sign of my growth. I’m excited to keep developing my set-up & pushing myself to be a more creative artist.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My specialty is landscape & wildlife photography. I am known for my annual wall calendar featuring gorgeous scenes from around Colorado. I am also known for my vibrant prints & artwork featuring my photos from around the United States. I am most proud of my calendar because it has been an annual project for me for the last 5 years. Being able to see my growth as a photographer with the quality of my calendars progressing over the years has giving me a chance to visually see my improvement. What sets my photography apart is the combination of patience, local knowledge, and a storyteller’s eye. I often spend hours in one location, waiting for the perfect light or a quick wildlife encounter. I give viewers not just a picture, but a sense of being there. My goal is to inspire a deeper appreciation for this place I call home and to encourage stewardship of its wild spaces.
How do you think about happiness?
Nature makes me truly happy. Ever since I was a child, my parents ensured that I have an appreciation for the outdoors. As someone who grew up in the midwest, it was a dream of mine to live in the mountains of Colorado one day. I am currently living in the foothills of Littleton surrounded by trees & wildlife, so my younger self would be so proud. Being able to see bears, elk, deer, foxes, hawks, & turkeys from my own front yard makes me so happy! Hiking, skiing, & paddle boarding are a few of my favorite ways to get outside to connect with nature, but I would be happy just sitting outside! Seeing the beauty of our wild spaces makes me realize how small we are. Life can be challenging, but being in nature gives you the opportunity to ground yourself & find small pockets of joy in life.
