Kat Cook

Hi Kat, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Nestled in the heart of Breckenridge, Colorado, Breck Film is more than just a festival; it’s a cinematic experience like no other. Founded in 1981 by visionary locals Mary Rianoshek and Meg Lass, Breck Film has transformed the town’s fall off-season into a vibrant celebration of film and community.

From its humble beginnings to its present-day prominence, Breck Film has remained true to its mission of bringing people together through the power of storytelling. The festival’s inaugural screening of The Stunt Man on September 17, 1981, marked the beginning of a legacy that continues to captivate audiences to this day.

Breck Film is a platform for cinematic masterpieces and hidden gems alike, showcasing films that have left a lasting impact on audiences worldwide. From the unforgettable drama of “The Shawshank Redemption” to the animated charm of “Kung Fu Panda,” Breck Film has curated a diverse and compelling lineup that appeals to film lovers of all ages.

What sets Breck Film apart is its commitment to fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among filmmakers and audiences. Through intimate Q&A sessions, engaging panels, and lively parties, attendees have the opportunity to connect with the creative minds behind the films and gain a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking.

In 2021, Breck Film unveiled The Eclipse Theater, a beloved fixture in the community. With its cozy ambiance and unparalleled film selection, The Eclipse Theater has become a cherished destination for cinephiles and casual moviegoers alike.

As Breck Film prepares to open its doors once again for the festival on September 19-22, 2024, we invite you to join us for a celebration of film, community, and the magic of storytelling. Experience the best that cinema has to offer and be a part of something truly special at Breck Film.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a film festival and movie theater is a challenging task, especially when faced with the allure of streaming services and our society’s increasingly shorter attention spans. In a world where entertainment is just a click away, getting people to attend live screenings requires offering something truly special. At Breck Film, we strive to do just that. We want to take you on a journey away from the endless scrolling of digital media and into the enchanting world of cinema.

There’s something magical about sitting in an actual theater when the lights dim and you lose yourself in a story for a few hours. It’s a chance to disconnect from the world and connect with the emotions on screen. It is not possible to continue what we do without our sponsors, donors, and faithful audience. And let’s not forget the joy of indulging in real movie theater popcorn, candy, and a cold drink – an experience that just can’t be replicated at home.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Summit County Native who loves playing in the snow on my snowboard and watching all kinds of TV and movies. This is a dream position to get to be the theater manager. I get to help bring so many films to our big little screen. There is nothing I am not a part of in our theater.

From programming our films, serving the customers, and being the projectionist. My favorite part of what I do is discussing the films with others. It is so fascinating to hear everyone’s response to a film when they walk out. If a bad movie is having you talking, then it is better than an average film that doesn’t make you think at all.
