Check Out Katherine Freed’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Freed

Hi Katherine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Last year I finally reached my own breaking point with online dating. I began to look at alternative options, — everything from singles events, to getting involved in clubs, to hiring a matchmaker — but none of it really felt like what I was looking for.

One day, I was sitting in my hairdresser’s chair complaining about the state of the dating world. In the middle of my rant, I realized I could create a unique dating experience that myself and others would enjoy. I immediately went home and began brainstorming, and that’s when I called my now business partner MaKayla Burwitz. We quickly set a meeting and decided that this is something we wanted to create together. As of January 2024, meetcute came into existence. We have experienced incredible support from our community, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, MaKayla and I have been incredibly lucky with the support we’ve received from the community. We’ve found many local businesses that are excited about partnering with us, and we’ve quickly developed a small following. We are, however, still a startup — so we have a great deal that we are learning every single day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Katherine: From a very young age, I had decided I wanted to go to medical school. Unfortunately, after working as a medical assistant during a “gap year”, it wasn’t long before I had to acknowledge that was not the right path for me. After so many years of prepping for medical school, coming to this realization was almost like shedding a part of my identity. It felt as though I was starting from scratch. I’d studied music and pre-medicine in college, and I had no idea where to go from there, as I didn’t want to pursue either as a career.
I had to begin exploring my options, which led to a few career changes over the last 5 years. During this time, however, I repeatedly found myself drawn towards entrepreneurship. This was an intimidating change, and for a long time I had no idea what I would even do in that realm.
The idea for meetcute changed this for me. Like many singles, I was incredibly frustrated with dating apps and felt there were few other options. I finally decided instead of continuing to complain about it, I would create something that would give people an exciting alternative. meetcute is designed to take as much pressure off of dating as possible by partnering with local businesses to create unique singles events. Every aspect of every event is designed to help conversation flow in an enjoyable and natural way.

MaKayla: I’ve always been infatuated with successful brands and what makes people fall in love with them. It was an easy decision to study business and further my education with a masters in marketing. Throughout graduate school I worked in content marketing for a commercial bank. While I loved the creative aspect, banking was not my passion and I decided to transition into pharmaceutical sales. Being a part of meetcute allows me to fulfill my creative side by building a brand that I hope others will love as well.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Every day MaKayla and I are learning something new — whether it’s about running a business or singles statistics. The most important lesson, however, has been learning that we can ask for help. The business community in Colorado is incredibly supportive and always ready to help in any way possible, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Pricing:

  • Pricing varies — if there’s an event out of your price point, there’s probably another event coming in your budget!
  • Age ranges are a recommendation and nothing more. If there’s an event that looks exciting and its a range you’re comfortable dating in, the more the merrier!
  • We love hearing from our community! Reach out to us any time by phone, email, or social media. We read it all!
