Check Out Katie Mitzelfelt’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mitzelfelt.

Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started photography when my kids were little because I wanted work that gave me flexibility and allowed me to be present for them. I’d always been drawn to photography, but becoming a mom really deepened that interest—it made me more aware of how important it is to capture moments that don’t last long.

I love being a family photographer because photos become more than pictures over time—they become memories people can hold onto. Life moves fast, kids grow, seasons change, and so many moments slip by before we realize how precious they were. I love being able to freeze those everyday, meaningful moments so families can look back and remember how it felt to be there. One day, these images won’t just tell a story of what life looked like, but of the love, connection, and little details that made their family theirs.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most businesses, there were learning curves early on – figuring out how to balance creativity with the business side of things, especially while raising young kids is not an easy feat.

There were (and are) still moments where I had to adjust, learn from mistakes, and be willing to pivot when something wasn’t working. As a creative, there’s always been an ebb and flow of inspiration, workload, and energy. Learning how to work through those cycles—without burning out or losing momentum—is a big part of the journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work centers around families, motherhood, and newborns, with a focus on capturing people in a way that feels natural, connected, and meaningful. I’m drawn to moments that unfold organically, and I specialize in creating images that feel relaxed and genuine rather than overly posed or forced.

I love creating work that feels honest and timeless, and I’m incredibly proud of the trust families place in me during some of their most meaningful milestones. As a mother myself, I bring a lot of patience, empathy, and understanding into each session. That perspective allows me to create images that truly matter while also making the experience feel calm, easy, and reassuring for families.

In addition to my photography, I’ve started mentoring other photographers and hosting educational content days for them. That work has fueled me in ways I didn’t expect, and it’s reminded me how important community is. Being able to share what I’ve learned and connect with others in the industry has become such a meaningful part of my journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I continue to pour countless hours of learning and practice in both photography and business which is extremely fulfilling. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to capture such beautiful families all over Colorado. Seeing families come back year after year, watching them grow is truly an honor.
