Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Ruby.
Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a country music artist from Denver, Colorado.
I grew up loving to sing — so much so that my mom used to say, “If your name isn’t in lights one day, I did something wrong”. I would sing everywhere and anywhere I could. Whether that be National Anthems, school talent shows, or in the shower. As I got older, I was singing the National Anthem around 3-5 times a week for both my high school and outside events. Juggling being a student, athlete, and musician, my weeks were crazy. But I loved it!
My junior year of high school, I was asked to sing the National Anthem for the CHSSA State Wrestling Tournament in February 2017. I had just signed to play collegiate soccer in West Virginia, so I told myself that this was going to be the last National Anthem I would ever sing. Boy was I wrong! After I sang, news stations and radio stations all over Denver were asking for interviews and covered the performance on air. After accumulating over 5 million views, that is when the Denver Broncos reached out. They asked me to sing for a pre-season game in August of 2017. After that, they called back a couple of weeks later and asked if I would sing for their home-opening, Monday night, September 11th game. They said that the person who was scheduled to do that game had canceled, and the actual players had requested that I sang. WHAT! It was so crazy. I ended up singing that night in 2017 and that was the day that my life completely changed. A week later I had signed with a record label, I had another video on the internet that was rising in millions of streams, and I graduated high school early to pursue a dream that I never thought that I could achieve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not in the slightest, but I think that’s why they call it “chasing your dreams”. If everything you ever wanted in life came easy to you, then I don’t think it would be as rewarding when you finally obtained it.
I was really young when I started out in my music career, so naturally, I had a lot of growing to do. Both in who I was as a person but also professionally as well. I had to learn quickly how to grow a thick skin and jump on every opportunity that is thrown your way. I also had to learn how to follow my gut and make decisions that were best for me and not necessarily what was best for anyone else. Being the people pleaser that I am, I think that was probably the hardest lesson out of all. At 17, and even now at times, I can be naive, and the truth is that the music industry is not a path for the faint of heart. Relationally and professionally, I have been tested more than I can count. But, the number one thing I can say is that as long as you surround yourself with people that you trust and have your best interest in mind, and as long as you stay true to your beliefs and morals, you can do anything you put your mind to.
I’m incredibly grateful for everything that has been thrown at me, both in negative and positive ways, and I wouldn’t change any of it. If I could, then I wouldn’t be the person, professional, or musician that I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Country Music Singer and best known for my music I have released, along with singing the National Anthem here and there. I am also a worship leader at a church called Flatirons Church and best known for my rendition of How Great Thou Art back on Easter of 2022.
I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that I intertwine my faith and love of music. It’s no secret that country music and worship music go hand in hand musically and even lyrically at times. But overall, I don’t know how common it is to go to a show that incorporates both. I am proud of my faith and I am proud to be in the genre of country and worship music whose fans are hard-working, Jesus-loving people.
What does success mean to you?
I think a lot of times, success is defined by tangible things. Whether that is the number of followers you have on social media, or how much money you make, or how many awards you have hanging on your shelves. And sure, all those things are amazing and couldn’t have been earned without endless amounts of work ethic, drive, and some grit. But to me, success is being able to look back on what you did, how you lived, and who you touched and say “I did some good in the world”. My number one rule is to always be kind. Always. And if I can touch someone in some way, whether that is through my music or through a conversation or just smiling at someone, than I have succeeded.
