Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendyl Spriggs.
Hi Kendyl, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Me and a group of close friends (all in our early 20’s) would get together on the weekends play smash brothers, order takeout and make music together. Before we knew it, we had an album that we called Everybody Eats and an ever-expanding collective that we called Bottega. We continued to make music; our fanbase grew slowly but surely and eventually, I started producing/directing our music videos out of necessity. I wasn’t great but I had always been obsessed with music videos as a kid so if nothing else I always knew what I liked and what I didn’t. After making a couple of low-budget music videos, I shift focus to shooting weddings and couples alongside my wife Diana (founder of Flor De Campo Photography) who was already a brilliant photographer in her own right. I quickly fell in love with telling a couples story through my lens and everyone one I worked with had nothing but nice things to say about my work. So about a year ago, I decided to channel all of my creative energy into videography and founded “A Simple Kendyl Production”. And about a month ago, my wife and I loaded all of our belongings into a budget truck and drove to our new home here in Denver. It’s been quite the ride so far and it’s only just the beginning.
the meaning behind my name is that I believe that often the most important things are the simple things. Whether it be the passion that fuels your business, time spent with the ones you love or the memory behind your favorite song. These are the things I like to capture because these are the things that make for a great story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for me is setting healthy boundaries in my business. Once I start shooting/editing a video, it is hard for me to rest until the project is complete. This has often come at the expense of sleep and quality time with my friends and family. Recently I have been trying to set hard and fast rules like no work emails or texts after 6pm or on the weekends and if I am editing for any longer than 2 hours I will save the project and take a break. It’s still a work in progress but I’m trying.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a filmmaker and video creator who specializes in Weddings, Commercials and Music Videos. What sets me apart from others is my background in/obsession with music which has a direct effect on the way I edit.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Try everything more than once (first impressions can sometimes be misleading). The first time I shot a music video, I made so many mistakes and the end product wasn’t something I am incredibly proud of. The next time I shot a music video, it got over ten-thousand views on YouTube and was shown in front of a live audience in a movie theater. If I had just given up on music videos and told myself I’m not cut out for that field I would have never had that experience of attending a film premiere for something I shot and edited.
